On April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP will no longer be available. Don't let your PC go unprotected.
What is Windows XP end of support? Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.
As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to help protect your PC.)
If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

I would take XP over Vista or 8 any day. I would take 95 or 98 over vista or 8 any day. They used to know how to make a mouse work and so much more.
Dell has the Win7 OS on a computer for ~$324. I'm just going to buy a new PC.

I have a Mac, I run XP in Parallels when I absolutely must run a windoze only program.
That’s why both my desktop at home and my laptop runs Windows 7 Home Edition (Service Pack 1). In my humble opinion, the best version of Windows since Windows 2000 Professional.

Since a lot of medical devices are still running on XP, I’d say this is an Obama plot to kill the old folks.
Sounds like good advice. My HP desktop is 10+ years old and gettin' cranky.
The new Windows probably won’t run on an older machine so check out some versions of Linux before buying a new computer

If you’re running hardware spec’d for xp, I would definitely go the new machine route. imho, cheaper and would present you with far fewer hardware compatibility complications.
Problem is many ATM machines still run XP.

Microsoft will still provide support to companies that pay for it.
There are tens of thousands of medical instruments that still run XP. This means in a few weeks, they will no longer be considered HIPAA compliant and many medical facilities will not allow these devices to be used. Particularly the facilities getting federal reimbusements for medicare and medicaid patients. In many cases there are no upgrades available for these systems due to the way the code is written for a particular OS version. So they effectively become junk and medical facilities will be forced to spend big bucks to replace the equipment, if they can. There was an effort started by some medical groups to get a ruling on HIPAA restrictions until this gets sorted out, but I never heard more about it.
I upgraded an older Averatec XP laptop (1 gig maxxed out mem) to Debian 7.2 xfce. It works great.

Ray, perhaps you would know about this - I just “upgraded” to Windows 8.1, and read of the need to reinstall the Office version I have to get it to work. After reinstalling my Office 2007 version, ... nothing is available, as though this version of Office won’t run with Win8.1. Do you know of a way to get Office 2007 to run in Windows 8.1?
