Two teenage girls have been charged with abuse after filming themselves laughing as they hit an elderly resident at the Illinois care home they worked in.
Chemyra Barnett and Jacqueline Santos, who are both 18, were charged with aggravated battery of a person over 60, and unlawful videotaping in court on Friday.
The teenagers have also been banned from the Rosewood Care Center, where they were alleged to have hit a 98-year-old woman.

I don't disagree with it, but it seems like doing this to ANY helpless or feeble person should be the crime.
The fact that one victim was 98 makes it all the more sickening.
I can only imagine what the victim's grandkids would like to do to these perps.
This is a preview of the future of whites as they age. Someday, most of the elderly in nursing homes will be white, while the younger employees will be nonwhite. Do you think those employees will care about a bunch of old white guys and gals? Think they’ll treat ‘em kindly?
Who would even hire two thugs who looked like that to work with elderly people in that capacity?
I decided long ago I will never go into a nursing home. This just further confirms it.

She says there’s an RN right now who comes to work under the influence of drugs or something. She’s often unsteady on her feet and has been known to nod off at her desk. So far she still has her job.
Needless to say, she and most of the offenders are of ‘the protected class’.
She thinks the hospital is afraid to fire them for fear of a lawsuit or something.
Really scary.
You can get a nurse assistant degree in what- 6 months?
They’re in demand. It’s a paycheck.
I don’t imagine they dare turn away too many of ‘the protected class’.

How can a 98-year-old be “hit” or “struck” without causing injuries? I have a feeling this wasn’t an attack but a fake beating, a joke in bad taste. Even bruises would count as injuries, wouldn’t they? And old people bruise very easily.
Maybe they made some kind of contact with her, which allowed the charge of aggravated assault to be brought, but I don’t believe they hit her in the ordinary sense of the word. If they are too weak to injure a 98-year-old in an attack, then they are too weak to be nurses. (Of course lack of adequate empathy may be the greater problem — not that nurses should have a lot of empathy. If they did, doing their job would be too painful. I myself couldn’t stand to work all the time with people who are suffering or dying.)
In any case what they did showed a lack of respect, and even persons who have lost much of their ability to think don’t deserve to be treated like that.

In addition, a person commits this offense if the person is an owner, operator, or employee of a nursing facility, assisted living facility, intermediate care facility, or other institutional care facility and the person intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence by omission causes to an elderly who is a resident of that group home or facility:
◾serious bodily injury;
◾serious mental deficiency, impairment, or injury;
◾bodily injury; or
◾exploitation.
Although treated as a separate offense in court, this comes with similar penalties. "Knowingly or intentionally" causing serious injury will be charged as a felony of the first degree, whereas "recklessly" committing the act will be considered a felony of the second degree.
If the offender knowingly or intentionally causes bodily injury, they will be charged with a felony of the third degree, and if they do so "recklessly" they will be charged with a state jail felony.
As for specific definitions, "elderly person" is considered an individual that is 65 years or older.
Dang. They sure were hit with the ugly stick HARD. Also, one can see goldfish swimming around in their eyes. Do you think a THOUGHT ever occurred to either of them? Their best use would be as organ donors, I think. Anyone who would beat on a 98 year old doesn’t deserve to walk the earth.
Poor use of the Queen’s English. But I suppose they were attempting to save newsprint. But considering it actually just saving a minute amount of bandwidth I find it appalling.
I find it equally appalling that these teenagers are so ignorant of the law and rules of evidence that they would video themselves in the commission of felony assault.
Well it is to be expected from those going to public schools these days.
