2014 Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Hoefling today challenged incumbent Governor Terry Branstad to a series of five debates in the run up to the June 3rd primary.

His proposal includes four smaller events hosted and organized by willing county GOP organizations within the four congressional districts, and would culminate in a large venue debate hosted by the state party. Any proceeds would be split proportionally between the various party organizations participating, for use in electing local Republicans in November. Moderation would be provided by the state and county party chairmen.

Hoefling said, “I think ‘Building Iowa’s Future,’ which is Terry Branstad’s campaign theme, is the right focus for debate. But I also think that the people of Iowa deserve to hear both candidates in this primary explain fully what they think that future should look like.”

He added, “If Governor Branstad does not find this reasonable, constructive proposal to be acceptable, I am willing to debate any time, anywhere in the state, under any circumstance.”

Terry won’t do 5 debates.
He’s got the election in the bag.

That may or may not be, Eric.

But the fact remains, the people of Iowa deserve to hear what both candidates’ vision of the future of our state is.

So your running as a Republican now instead of 3rd party? I think primary challenges against incumbents are generally a good thing and I hope you keep Branstad’s feet to the fire (though we both know he almost certainly won’t agree to these debates). My question is, if you lose the primary and Branstad is the nominee again, will you vote for him?

I’ll be happy to answer that question, just as soon as it has been asked of the Governor, and he has supplied an answer.

Sure, he should indeed have to answer the same question. And if he refused to answer or indicated he would not vote for you in the general, I would think less of him for it. Darn right he should vote for you if you defeat him and become the nominee. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't answer the question. You have a history of 3rd party activity and no political party is going to embrace you, nor most of its voters, if they believe you aren't part of the team. If your not going to vote for the GOP nominee then your just using their machinery because you know you can't win as an indie. Why would any political party even acknowledge you if they know that is the case?

I have a question, what do you do for a living. Just curious, would like to know what field you are currently involved with.

Agreed.
TB has been around for quite a while.

I remember when he was not Bob Ray's pick for Lt. Gov.

I covered the statehouse for radio/TV for a few years in the 70s.

I don’t have any problem being embraced by the rank and file of the GOP.

But you haven’t shown them that you’re a team player. Why should they support you?

I’m a team player for a core set of republican principles. Most of them know that. The ones that don’t will find out.

You didn’t answer the question. If you aren’t a team player that will help them when they need it, why should they help you?

I don’t have any problem being embraced by the rank and file of the GOP.

Aren't you supposed to be a straight shooter, not the typical politician? Yet you won't answer a simple yes or no question. If Branstad wins the Republican nomination, will you vote for him in the general election? It's just a yes or no question.

If you continue to not answer the question, I think we can all assume the answer is no, you won't vote for Branstad. And if no is the answer, then you are just using the Republican apparatus to get somewhere politically because you know you can't do it as an independent candidate.

If you ever want to get anywhere, you are going to have to approach this differently. Ron Paul got nowhere in the GOP, his son Rand just got done helping elect Jolly in Florida by helping move some libertarian votes his way. If your never a team player for the party you choose to run in, they will pretty much never acknowledge you.

Why not help campaign for Branstad if he wins the nomination? And we know that is the likely outcome. So you help him in his election effort and people and party members throughout the state may actually help you run for something next time around (assuming you make a decent candidate). Maybe start with something less than President or Governor.

I told you that I don’t have any problem answering the question. And I will be happy to do so when, out of fairness, it is asked of the Governor first. And answered, of course.

LOL, you must not know EternalVigilance, getting honesty out of him is like trying to squeeze orange juice from a rock.

I have not been in the least dishonest. I simply won’t be bullied into playing the game of those who insist that we put party before principle. Sorry.
