A Haines woman beat back a wolf with a ski pole but was unable to keep it from killing and devouring one of four dogs she was walking with during a midday ordeal near 40 Mile Haines Highway.

Yikes! Imagine what a 10 mill would have done to the wolf though!

The wolf will be back to eat another dog. This woman goes out into the Alaska wilderness without a firearm and won’t carry one after this event. Just dumb.

Bochart said the attack rattled the surviving dogs and made her more cautious about going outdoors with pets, but she's not making any big changes, like carrying a gun on her hikes, as someone has suggested.

"I don't want it to make me fearful. Ninety-nine percent of the time you can move through the wilderness and be safe if you're respectful of large animals. It's a one-in-a-million occurrence when you meet an animal that's desperate and willing to take a chance."

"I really wouldn't want this to end with the wolf getting shot. I'd rather she just leave and live a full life somewhere else," Bochart said.

The lady needs her stupid ass kicked. She shouldn’t have outdoor
pets if she so willingly gives them up for wolf food. Carry a gun,
damn fool. The next victim of that brazen wolf might be a kid.

Yeah, but she's 24 and grew up right there, and still says ""I really wouldn't want this to end with the wolf getting shot. I'd rather she just leave and live a full life somewhere else," It's been horribly cold in the pass with windchills to 50 below for extended periods this winter. Makes a wolf desperately hungry.

Carnivores. It’s what they do.

“Ninety-nine percent of the time you can move through the wilderness and be safe”...

So she should expect to be attacked about every 100th walk. If I were her, I would just skip that 100th walk, and start again on the 101st walk. That’s what I would do. Yeah. That’s what I would do.

Now why would the wolf go somewhere else when it just found a larder full of dogs and an idiot? I don't think it's fair for the dogs to die because the woman is an idiot, but they will because dogs give unconditional love and loyalty.

What she really should have done is try to reason with the wolf, ask the wolf what she was “feeling” at the moment she was ready to pounce on her mutt and eat it.
Crazy ass woman is, as usual, putting human emotions to an animal.
I can’t believe what I had just read.

If she wants her dogs to be eaten, or herself, or a child she might have with her then go right ahead, because that wuvable, widdle wolf doesn’t give a damn. All they see you as is a meal.

once the wolf eats all her dogs, the next time it’s hungry and she’s walking a ski pole isn’t going to give her the win.

what a favor she will do to all her eaten dogs.

while it would really be great if we could reason with wild carnivore predators,

we don’t live in a Disney animation and it doesn’t work that way.

How does

"“Ninety-nine percent of the time you can move through the wilderness and be safe”..." and

"It's a one-in-a-million occurrence when you meet an animal that's desperate and willing to take a chance."

make mathematical sense?

I read the whole article and I still can’t believe my own eyes.

Some of the comments were insane.

“Hannah Bochart sounds like a brave and nature-loving woman. She did all the could to protect her dogs and yet she still has compassion for the lone, starving wolf. You are a great woman!”.

I’m sorry.
No, she did *not* “do all she could” and she freely admits she will not be doing all she can, in the future.

For me, the article would have been overflowing with repeated mentions of bullets.

LOTS of bullets, much blood and a dead wolf.

None of that pathetic, emotion-projecting, creepily detailed narrative she spewed.

This went on for 20 minutes??

Nope.

Dead wolf.

Very DEAD wolf.

Instead, there is now an even more emboldened wolf who knows it can kill with people nearby without fear of harm to itself.

In a week, it will be hungry again.

Hope people keep their kids inside.
