Cosmos came in fourth place for network during its 9 pm time slot. I was a big fan of the original but I heard this newer version really goes out of its way to insult people's beliefs. When I heard they went the the Catholic Church anti-science story and even got that story wrong I decided to not watch. Tyson is pretty well known for his militant atheism and the executive producer is in the same camp as Tyson.

That’s why I won’t watch it...as fascinated about space as I am...I will not give my time to someone who marginalizes my beliefs.

I would normally watch this sort of thing but after seeing an interview with the makers I changed my mind.

There are lots of science minded Christians and going out of their way to insult us should hurt.

We turned it off after six minutes. Dumbed-down, condescending, Common Core crap. The host is vile. Carl Sagan flopped out of his grave while it was being shown.

He would do better hosting a kids show

I watched last night with my son and debunked the parts of the show that were smarmy. Like the statement “Evolution is a FACT”

Yes, they parsed off any theory of Intelligent Design as something some people need to believe “to feel special”.

I also asked him to think about where those NatGeo graphic artist-scientists think the moon Titan got all that oil and fossil fuel - from what fossils?

I think Tyson is so visible for two reason:

1: Affirmative Action
2: He is director of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC so if you need a half articulate astronomer for TV he is handy

I never heard of Sagan until he did Cosmos.

"I understand the Catholic Church has been very pro-science. Didn’t a priest coin the “Big Bang”?"

The Christian Church created the University system. One area the Catholic and Protestant church have been very much in agreement on was the progress of institutionalized higher education. Virtually every Ivy League college started out as a Christian seminary.

When the goofy Carl Sagan presented Cosmos we were seeing images we had never seen before. But now, after all these years, we’re seeing the same images. Sure, they’re farther away and have different shapes, but the entire universe seems to be made up of cold big rocks and flaming big rocks.

What they’re really looking for is a second planet that has life, because that would be another nail in the Creation narrative. They fawn over every instance of water that “may have been” present on some other empty rock because, for them, all life needs to exist is a little water and billions of years and viola!

episode 1 with zer0 introducing the series, turned me off from the get go.

the first episode with its Catholic bashing from an incident 400 years old(around the time the constitution was written) where Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for supporting geocentrism, ticked me off as there was no caveat about how the RC Church is currently no longer executing nor Luddites.

episode 2 was better...

The best summary criticism I have heard is they devoted 25% of the first show to a non-scientist being killed for being a heretic. No scientific basis for it. Just wanted to spread a debunked story.

Dead to most folks right out the gate.

I recently re-watched my Cosmos DVDs for the umpteenth before I heard of this new Cosmos series.
Given that Obama introduced it, and given the militant abuse of the scientific method by the left for political purpose (e.g., anthropogenic global warming)I have had zero enthusiasm to watch it, suspecting the worse.

PS I have seen Tyson on other science TV shows and he was not doing emotional schtick and was pretty likable...

someone, perhaps the production company head (Seth MacFarlane ), decided to give Tyson bad acting lessons.

he should play it like the scientist he is and can the melodrama....

He may have a great mind, I have no idea... he is certainly not a great narrator..

the original series (hugh) was incredibly thought provoking and entertaining. Carl Sagan was just that good.. He packaged it up beautifully...

this guy... hmmm... I agree, he should be narrating this kind of thing for high school presentations... he certainly loves the sound of his own voice.... now who does THAT remind us of ?

I watched the first twenty minutes of the first episode. I could not finish, I was getting ill. It had nothing to do with insulting my beliefs, and everything to do with insulting my intelligence.

Offensive, condescending, and smarmy would have been a huge improvement. It was stoopid, confusing, unfocused, hokey, superficial, transcendently glib, juvenilely simplistic, inane and disappointing. I WAITED FORTY YEARS FOR THIS POS!!!!! We have learned SO MUCH MORE about the Cosmos in the last forty years, communications technology and media have advanced so far, and all we get is this stale dog vomit.

A total, complete and utter failure, a disgrace.

I still remember a great bit from the Carl Sagan version all these years later.

“So, the early astronomers with their crude telescopes looked up at the planet Venus. And they realized, they really couldn’t see any detail on the surface.

So they thought, “Why is that”? Well, obviously they were looking at clouds. The planet was shrouded in a veil of clouds, and the clouds were so thick they obscured all views of the planet surface.

Well, what does that tell us? Well, with all those clouds, they must have a lot of water vapor. So the surface of Venus must be a very wet, humid place. Lots of water vapor, probably coming from massive pools and rivers.

And, if it that humid with all that water, it must be a very lush, tropical place. With lush vegetation, palm trees.

And if it is like a rain forest, it must be teeming with animal life. Birds and insects. Maybe even dinosaurs.

Observation: We can’t see anything.
Conclusion? DINOSAURS!”

Boy, does THAT describe the logical process of a lot of people I’ve met over the years!

He was the best, ethnic, washed-up physicist they could find that would prostitute himself in the name of progressive propaganda.

Oppenheimer was a genius, and in the end an idiot for believing that had he not succeeded in building the bomb, the Germans would never had succeeded either.

That makes him an arrogant idiot, to boot.

Bill Gates admits its ‘logical’ for humans to believe in God, and probably (MAYBE) respects the probabilistic evidence against all of this happening by accident. He won’t, however, deign to indulge in any hocus-pocus nonsense by recognizing his own evident limitations and have the humility and open-mindedness to pursue some sort of relationship with his ‘unexplored probabilities’.

There are doctrinal problems with _intelligent_ life on other planets, though.

Why should they suffer for Adam’s sin?
Would Christ have to visit each planet and die for them as well?
What about “once for all” and “it is finished” - were we the last planet on which He died for sin?

I simply do not understand what possesses these people into thinking that inserting Obama into their show will somehow “help” them. Jimmy Fallon did it. Cosmos did it. Yeah, it may give Obama a rise, but 55% of the country can't stand the guy, so right off the bat you shout out that you are just another run-of-the-mill Obama stooge and that gives half the country a reason to tune you out.

And then what are you left with? Some portion of the other half of the country that may be regular viewers.

For the life of me, I cannot understand the strategy of inserting Obama. It's as if they feel they all need to pay homage to Obama and this is their way of doing it, almost like a religious observance ritual. Weird.

It depends what “fact” evolution is..it does exist in I can show change to adapt. .in fact I would say it even biblical. .from to flood to Sodom and Gomorrah ..God has culled out the wicked to improve the species

But is evolution “fact” for creation of all species?..no it not provable and no period

First for prove..well man currently is creating new species things like frankenfood and as a science improves we will create more and more new species so created species will exist so how do you distinguish in 1000 years between created species and evolve species? If you have no test now for created vs evolved how can you test what happened in the past to prove created vs evolve. You can assume but you can't prove all species evolved. Assume is not scientific proof.

Second not all species evolved as a fact.

The theory of evolution has one critical component, it must act on existing life. It does not explain the creation of life. Life that by definition has to have a second mechanism that creates and therefore created the first species therefore evolution did not create every species ....that's a fact

Good . . . wonder why

1. Day one was Obambi's introduction of the series (wish he and his obnoxious wife would stop showing up all over the place)

2. Evolution talk about Man's million years' journey from slime in a pool (we lumbered around for a few mil trying to evolv from them apes, ya' know)

3. Whole thing done by an avowed atheist

4. There will undoubtedly be no mention of God's design of the Cosmos (kinda' just happened, ya' know, by chance)

But don't worry . . . H'wood will drown the series with big time awards next year, kinda' to shove it in our face.
