Posted on 03/18/2014 12:54:48 PM PDT by SeekAndFind
Best-selling author Kevin Trudeau, whose name became synonymous with late-night TV pitches, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for bilking consumers through ubiquitous infomercials for his book, "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About." As he imposed the sentence prosecutors had requested, U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman portrayed the 50-year-old Trudeau as a habitual fraudster going back to his early adulthood. So brazen was Trudeau, the judge said, he once even used his own mother's Social Security number in a scheme.
"Since his 20s, he has steadfastly attempted to cheat others for his own gain," Guzman said, adding that Trudeau is "deceitful to the very core."
Trudeau, whose trademark dyed black hair turned partially gray as he awaited sentencing in jail, showed little emotion as the stiff sentence was handed down at the hearing in Chicago.
Addressing the judge earlier in a 10-minute statement, Trudeau apologized and said he's become a changed man. He said he's meditated, prayed and read self-help books while locked up at Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Seems a bit much for selling snake oil.
...so if his books were all so much BS, why did people keep buying them? Ridiculous sentence. Corzine is still running loose.
Of course he’s a fraudster. But no more than most writers of self-help books.
Something doesn’t smell right here. They are criminalizing opinion. There are freedom-of-press issues here; they are going after low-hanging fruit to establish a precedent. Then they ramp up from there.
As always ... it’s “buyer beware” ...
For the same reason they keep voting for the Kenyan and various other sub-human filth known as demofilth.... THEY ARE STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmm.....a fraudster hawking healthcare, using a fake SS#. Sounds familiar.
Nuts, for a moment I thought this was Gary Trudeau.

I think you are correct. My wife has several of Trudeau's books and I have read parts of them. We both agree they contain useful information and insights. His offers of ‘free publications’ are not fraudulent. His people carefully tell you that other ‘other offers’ cost money and just say ‘decline’ and the free books will still be free except for a normal shipping charge. This whole prosecution really stinks.
First convicted of fraud more than twenty years ago. He has never let up.
...so Trudeau found a niche...selling books to stupid people. Ten years? Please.
So when does Al Gore go to jail?
I was addressing the reason people buy his books, not the validity of the sentence or even the prosecution.
He gets 10 years for basically deceiving people? Obama should spend his life in jail...seriously. He deceived millions of people by telling blatant lies about Obamacare which is costing the taxpayers trillions of dollars.
The FDA is another of the US feral government's continuing criminal enterprises.
The last name says it all!
We are stuck with ‘Bébé’ Trudeau (Justin) and suffered for too many years under ‘Papa’ Trudeau (Pierre Elliot).
So when does the Kenyan get to do the perp walk in a cuffs and an orange jumpsuit? Talk about massive deception and fraud.
Yeah, he’s no more of a fraudster than Joel Osteen. Wonder if they recovered that money stolen from the offerings yet.
Obama’s deception will create more economic chaos than any self help author could imagine.
He isn’t black or whatever flavor of the day
He must not have paid off his favorite rats.
You can write a book saying anything you want to, but you can't advertise the book as not requiring dieting when it does. That's fraud.
Although I suspect anybody who followed the diet did indeed lose weight!
The Way To Get Free Healthcare “They Won’t Tell You About”.
I understood that...just a general comment on the entire situation.
I always turned the tv channel when he would come on.
Just curious, who made the decision that he was defrauding people when he sold his books?
Something about airlifting stones whilst encased in a melted-sand abode...
He says he's not associated with any of the things he's "selling"...but they have to be sponsors of some sort.
Everyone knows that “Free Money” only comes from Obama’s stash!
So what is the difference between this man selling his cures then Cosmetic companies selling you lotion after lotion promising younger looking skin? Or cosmetic companies telling you that the plumping mascara will make your lashes look younger which they don’t unless you have long lashes to begin with.
And "If You Like Your Doctor, You Can Keep Him"
And "Obamacare is Revenue Neutral."
The problem wasn’t he was selling snake oil, he was selling snake oil in defiance of federal court orders he was subject to. That my friends will get you in the hoosgow.
If you want to write a book about losing weight that requires folks to follow a 500 calorie a day diet, fine... But when you go on TV and tell people your book tells you how to lose weight without being hungry on a 500 calorie a day diet, you are going to get yourself in trouble.
This guys been a bamboozler his entire life, and had courts order him to stop doing it for decades, he kept on doing it... Finally caught up to him.
Lie with dogs, wake up with fleas.
ah....the piece de resistance
Maybe there is something in one or more of his books which really struck a nerve.
If you read the article, there are a lot of bad facts here.
The Federal Trade Commission sued him (civilly) for false advertising. He lost, and there was a court order against him to stop running the ads and pay restitution. He continued to run the ads-- 32,000 times after the court order-- and hid all his money in shell companies to avoid paying the restitution.
The criminal conviction was not for the original false advertising, but for criminal contempt of court.
This gets more headlines for corrupt prosecutors.
William F. Buckley thought when his son was talking about "Trudeau", he was referring to Pierre.
All those Elis stick together...
Trudeau violated court orders to pay a $37 million fine for alleged false marketing claims. The judge told him, You cant talk your way out of this.
CHICAGO A judge in Chicago has released Kevin Trudeau from jail after the infomercial pitchman spent the night behind bars for violating court orders to pay a more than $37 million fine.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that as Judge Robert Gettleman freed the 50-year-old, he warned Trudeau hes on a tight leash and could be jailed again next week.
Trudeau insists hes penniless and cant pay the fine that stems from allegedly false claims made in his weight-loss book.
A court-appointed receiver told the judge that Trudeau insists he cant remember basic aspects about his assets, including which banks some of his accounts are in.
To counter Trudeaus claim hes destitute, Federal Trade Commission lawyers Wednesday presented evidence hes spent $920 on cigars and $359 on two haircuts.
For someone who says hes broke, Kevin Trudeau sure owns some fancy cuff links, the feds say.
The white-gold, diamond cuff links from swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe cost the silver-tongued infomercial king and convicted fraudster $12,500, they say.
Then theres the overseas bookies account containing 73,000 Swiss francs; the Australian bank account containing $141,000; $100,000 worth of gold bars; his wifes new apartment in Ukraine, and the unaccounted-for millions passing through businesses he controls, they say.
For five years, Trudeau has failed to pay a single cent of a $38 million fine U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman imposed on him for flouting a court-ordered ban on making false claims in his diet book infomercials.
Though he was until recently driving a $340,000 Bentley, employing two chefs and was caught spending on luxuries including $180 Vidal Sassoon haircuts and $1,000 worth of fine meats, he continues to insist he is penniless and homeless and cant pay the fine. His lawyers say hes being unfairly targeted by the shrill complaints of the Federal Trade Commission.
Trudeaus activities have been the subject of both criminal and civil action. He was convicted of larceny and credit card fraud in the early 1990s, and in 1998 he was sued by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for making false or misleading claims in infomercials promoting his book The Weight-Loss Cure They Dont Want You to Know About. In 2004, he settled that action, by agreeing to pay a $500,000 fine and consenting to a lifetime ban on promoting products other than his books via infomercials.
On Nov. 29, 2011, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a $37.6 million fine levied against him for violating that 2004 settlement. Additionally, on remand, the district court modified its final order, requiring that he post a $2 million bond before engaging in future infomercial advertising. In April 2013 he was reported to have filed for bankruptcy to avoid fines and stay further Federal prosecution.
In September and October 2013, he was twice briefly jailed for continued failure to pay fines related to his conviction, pleading poverty while continuing to live a lavish lifestyle. In November 2013, Trudeau was convicted of criminal contempt and incarcerated. On March 17, 2014, Trudeau was sentenced to 10 years in jail stemming for his November 2013 conviction of criminal contempt.
He’ll talk his way out of it — a new infomercial is on its way.
Profit from climate alterations “they” don’t want you to know about! Own the local weather forecast and make media pay for it!.
Wehn will Al Gore spend time in the Chicago Metropolitan?
Dang, was hoping it was the cartoonist.
"Free Room and Board Methods "THEY" Don't Want You to Know About" by Kevin Trudeau
Correct! Obama makes Trudeau look like a kindergartner as a “fraudster”!
This is incredible.
How many other ‘authors’ should ALSO go to prison?
How many salesmen?
They all go to jail for ‘embellishing’?
Hey, nobody HAS to buy Trudeau’s books. I’ve seen the guy for decades and he’s never convinced me to part with one dime.
Our current congress and idiot president, however, are FORCING me (all of us) out of my money - by LYING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Which is a bigger crime? Which deserves lengthy prison sentences???
But for that you get 10 years?
Dang, maybe I should write some books.
