Best-Selling Author Kevin Trudeau Gets 10 Years In Prison For Massive Deception
Business Insider ^ | 03/18/2014 | MICHAEL TARM

Best-selling author Kevin Trudeau, whose name became synonymous with late-night TV pitches, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for bilking consumers through ubiquitous infomercials for his book, "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About." As he imposed the sentence prosecutors had requested, U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman portrayed the 50-year-old Trudeau as a habitual fraudster going back to his early adulthood. So brazen was Trudeau, the judge said, he once even used his own mother's Social Security number in a scheme.

"Since his 20s, he has steadfastly attempted to cheat others for his own gain," Guzman said, adding that Trudeau is "deceitful to the very core."

Trudeau, whose trademark dyed black hair turned partially gray as he awaited sentencing in jail, showed little emotion as the stiff sentence was handed down at the hearing in Chicago.

Addressing the judge earlier in a 10-minute statement, Trudeau apologized and said he's become a changed man. He said he's meditated, prayed and read self-help books while locked up at Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center.

...so if his books were all so much BS, why did people keep buying them? Ridiculous sentence. Corzine is still running loose.

Of course he’s a fraudster. But no more than most writers of self-help books.

Something doesn’t smell right here. They are criminalizing opinion. There are freedom-of-press issues here; they are going after low-hanging fruit to establish a precedent. Then they ramp up from there.

I think you are correct. My wife has several of Trudeau's books and I have read parts of them. We both agree they contain useful information and insights. His offers of ‘free publications’ are not fraudulent. His people carefully tell you that other ‘other offers’ cost money and just say ‘decline’ and the free books will still be free except for a normal shipping charge. This whole prosecution really stinks.

First convicted of fraud more than twenty years ago. He has never let up.

I was addressing the reason people buy his books, not the validity of the sentence or even the prosecution.

I agree - it sounds bizarre.
So he wrote a bunch of books full of blarney and exaggerated claims. Big deal -- there are whole industries built on that methodology. If people choose to bite - that is their prerogative.
There are chronic liars in our Government who cause a heckuva lot more damage and that force us to pay for their blarney (and crap sandwiches) against our choice. Those folks should be spending time breaking rocks.

He gets 10 years for basically deceiving people? Obama should spend his life in jail...seriously. He deceived millions of people by telling blatant lies about Obamacare which is costing the taxpayers trillions of dollars.

His real problem was with the FDA. According to the FDA, you can't make health claims about ANYTHING unless you first hire their buddies to perform "clinical studies" for millions of dollars.

The FDA is another of the US feral government's continuing criminal enterprises.

The last name says it all!

We are stuck with ‘Bébé’ Trudeau (Justin) and suffered for too many years under ‘Papa’ Trudeau (Pierre Elliot).

Yeah, he’s no more of a fraudster than Joel Osteen. Wonder if they recovered that money stolen from the offerings yet.
