ABC's prime-time soap opera is one of the most popular shows going. It's ABC's top-rated drama, the No. 1 show among African Americans and in the top five for women under 50. But more than that, it is one of the most talked-about series on television, consistently in the 10 most Tweeted shows and probably ranking behind only "The Walking Dead" in terms of watercooler importance.
But for me, every time I had watched an episode of "Scandal," I wanted to smash my set and then use the shards to poke myself in the eyes so I would never accidentally see it again. I am not averse to guilty pleasures, but with "Scandal," all I got was the guilt...

I watched the first couple seasons in spite of the married homos, but it went off the deep end of the sexual WTF pool in season three and I gave up.
I’ve never seen it. In fact, I’d never heard of it until now.
Good advice.
Midsomer Murders or Foyle’s War are on Netflix and Amazon Prime. The first has gently risqué wandering spouses who committ many murders. The Second is the same with WWII as the sobering background - lots of Nazis and greedy war profiteers for bad guys in addition to wandering spouses. That’s as off color as I can take. There are gays in both series but they generally kill someone to hide their behavior or provide outlandish comic relief.
That’s how I survive not having watched anything besides sports on regular TV. With the locker room dramas promised by the gay mafia, I may abandon most sports which are plenty sleezy anyhow.
My wife is a big fan of both shows and Detective Chief Inspector (retired) Tom Barnaby is one of my favorite TV characters.
Its a soap! The main character, Olivia Pope is a light skinned black woman, obiviously an avatar of the writer, Shonda Rhimes. All the powerful, hot white men want her and are obsessed with her. The one attractive white woman on the show, Mellie, is conniving ruthless and a pretty sympathetic character. I am team Mellie all the way. Also, the president is a Republican, and he is nailing a black woman and his chief of staff is gay, so see, in some cases it is shattering stereoypes
John Nettles has been great. We haven’t had the heart to watch since his retirement. It’s our all time favorite but Foyle’s war is close as is Inspector Lewis and the original Morse. They took the time to do four or five shows a year and did them well. These shows were not highly politicized, just entertaining. For that reason, I think the streaming TV will wipe out the networks with the original content they are coming up with.
Then why did you bother posting about it?
Because I found it interesting.
