4 UGA football players arrested on theft charges

Four Georgia football players, including safety Tray Matthews, turned themselves in to authorities and were arrested Monday night on multiple charges of theft by deception.

Others arrested were wide receiver Uriah LeMay, defensive lineman John Taylor and defensive end James DeLoach. They were all charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor theft. Three of the players -- Matthews, Taylor and DeLoach -- are accused of double-cashing their stipend checks while LeMay is charged with depositing his roommates' stipend check.

"Matthews, DeLoach and Taylor would basically take that check and deposit it through a mobile banking app. And then within a short period of time would go to a local convenience store and cash the checks. So they basically would cash the check twice," UGA chief of police Jimmy Williamson told the Macon Telegraph.

The four players were released on bond Monday night, with bond at $1,500 per charge. Misdemeanor theft means the charge is for stealing something less than $500 per charge.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt released a statement Tuesday morning:

"I'm aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way."

The Bulldogs are scheduled to start 2014 spring practice on Tuesday.

Matthews started six games as a freshman last year and was expected to compete for the starting spot at free safety.

DeLoach, who will be a junior this fall, has rarely played and moved to defensive end. Taylor, who will be a redshirt sophomore, had nine tackles and a sack last season. LeMay redshirted as a freshman last season

Translation: "I'm suspending them for the first half of our game against Podunk State."

Full rides, stipends, free housing...still need to steal.

Tell that to the kid who is working at the canteen and a night job to make his living expenses and books all while running up tens of thousands in loans for tuition.

I bet these underprivileged youth get nothing but a few weekends doing community service.

If Obama had sons....

See 3.

And FYI they are playing Clemson in the 1st game. So I guess you are right about Podunk State.

And they somehow thought they'd get away with that? Must be linemen.

Couldn’t stand the man when he was at UF.

Now I think he is a genius.

Here comes the “because they’re athletes, they need to get paid” argument...

HEY! Offensive linemen are the SMART ones... If these were linemen, they'd have to be on defense. I'd bet they were WR's or DB's.

i’m confused because cashing the check twice guarantees you’ll get caught. so how did they think they would get away with it?

Spurrier, the coach who suspended Stephen Garcia 5 times and still let him play. Garcia's playing Arena Football now. Yeah The Old Ball Coach is a real one to throw stones.

Honestly, what made them think they could get away with
it. I could see a drug addict trying to pull this off and
thinking they could get away with it but UGA collage
athletes. It must be something else. May be they think
that since Obama is king they should be allowed to get
away with it just like how the Obama gets away with the
fraud that he is. Does Obama empower the ignorant? Is
Obama giving the morons a false sense of omnipotence?
Most likely they are just real dumb people.
