Sleep loss may be more serious than previously thought, causing a permanent loss of brain cells, research suggests.

In mice, prolonged lack of sleep led to 25% of certain brain cells dying, according to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience.

If the same is true in humans, it may be futile to try to catch up on missed sleep, say US scientists.

They think it may one day be possible to develop a drug to protect the brain from the side-effects of lost sleep. …

I’ve had insomnia off and on the past few weeks. I don’t see any truth to the claims in this article, and adding some corn meal to the crust does wonders.

I’ve been an insomniac my entire life.

I coulduh invented something by now, if I’d only gotten reasonable amounts of sleep.

four hours and sometimes no hours seems reasonable to me...

I have trouble sleeping and it sucks. But as for their brain damage theory, I haven’t become a liberal yet.

which areas lost up to 25% of brain cells? if they were areas where it stopped a person being so aggressive, or angry, or liberal, i’d say we gotta keep those people up for a long, long time.

I only sleep 4 hours a day as we have more than 30 projects on TV and film. I would like to quote Napoleon’s statement he only sleeps 3-4 days but he eventually had Waterloo..

If this were true I wouldn’t be capable of functioning... although it may depend on which brain cells. I wouldn’t be capable of thinking (cerebral cortex), motor function (cerebellum), or feeling emotion (limbic system), but I seem to be doing just fine.

Must be true. I first read it as lost “sheep” so couldn’t understand what they had to do with brain cells.

Sleep deprivation has long been recognized as a factor in reduced brain function, having effects similar to concussion. This study appears to explain why.
