First Amendment enthusiasts are thrilled that Mike Adams, a criminology professor at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, won his lawsuit against administrators who denied him a promotion because of his conservative, Christian views.
Adams joined the university in 1993. He was an atheist at the time. By the year 2000, he had converted to Christianity and become an outspoken political conservative. He eventually wrote columns for Townhall.com.
In 2006, he was denied a promotion. Administrators were retaliating against him for his conservative views, he claimed.
The jury agreed.
Adamss lawyers said the victory is an important one for free speech on public university campuses.
This is an incredibly important victory for the First Amendment, said Travis Barham, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, in a statement to Campus Reform. To be able to speak freely without retaliation is a principle that should be a reality on campus and the jurors reassured that.
Adamss conservative views had irked many of his colleagues and some of his students, according to The College Fix.
In one such instance, a student blamed the 911 attacks on U.S. foreign policy. He responded by telling the student that the U.S. Constitution protects her bigoted, unintelligent and immature views. She responded by accusing him of harassment.
This is very rare, they normally refuse to hire non-lefties in the first place
Well, he was an atheist when they hired him. Once you get tenure, they can’t fire you, even if you become a decent person.
Send the Admins to ‘Gitmo....
“This is very rare, they normally refuse to hire non-lefties in the first place”
Very true. Congratulations, Professor!
And the thin skinned ignorant students.
He was a lefty atheist when he was hired.
Good on Mike. He’s been fighting those asshats for quite a while and fighting a good fight. Plus he plays guitar. I read his stuff on Townhall.com whenever it appears. UNC Wilmington if I remember right.
He was an atheist. Maybe he was also a lefty. Then he learned a thing or two at the university. That would make him a rarity, indeed.
bkmk

Awesome.
Great! Will he win damages?

And for all of those on FR who are busy telling me that the Soviet Union (formerly known as Russia) under Putin is freer than the US....I say look at this result. This outcome would NEVER have happened in the Soviet Union because Adams could have NEVER taken his case to court in the first place
singing to the choir here
This is poorly written. Had to go to two other sites to determine which court made this ruling. Turns out it was the federal district court in Greenville, SC. Probably too early to know if the school will appeal.
Mr. Barham said that it would be up to the judge who adjudicated the case to determine what penalties the UNC system will have to pay or what they will have to do to remedy their mistreatment of Dr. Adams. He said the jury deliberated less than two hours before finding for Dr. Adams because the case against the university system was so strong. He was asked what the university would do in response to the ruling and he declined to speak for them since he was not representing them. He said UNCW's lawyers and the UNC system lawyers were involved in representing the school which he said was standard practice in cases like this one.
Mike Adams and Ben Shapiro were my idols in canada before I immigrated stateside. It wasn’t Rush. I would just collect and read his articles whenever I got the chance.
