Last week, while driving my 2011 GT 5.0 Supreme, some idiot rear-ended me on the interstate.
Today, I got the news it is totalled.
I just got in from the body shop, removing the tags and gathering my things from it.
Barely 41K miles.
The car is a masterpiece. Everything about it — the power, the handling (amazing), the leather seats, even the gas mileage is exceptional for a 420 hp muscle car. I freaking love that car.
Now, I start my search for a replacement. It is unthinkable that I would consider buying anything else but another 5.0. If I have it my way, that is what I will drive until the day I die.
And it still hurts, I bet! I'd have cried too!
I did some research on it years ago. The P51 Mustang fighter plane inspired the lines of the car for the designers. So they named it the Mustang. But the marketing guys had it right — it was much better to “brand” the car with the smaller, nimble American wild horse. I think that was probably smart, and in any case, fortuitous in how the Ford Mustang captured and expressed two American legends in its genesis.
Here’s hoping that that day is a long, long way off! {^)
I like the looks, but will it sell to the traditional Mustang buyers? I hope so...

Those long, low late fifties to early sixties coupes work especially well when the suspension is lowered slightly with modern 18” rims and low profile tires, I tend to think it works because that’s what the designers actually had in mind but suspension, wheel and tire tech didn’t permit at the time.
I usually am not much of a fan of that powder blue paint color, but it really works on that Pontiac, maybe it’s the steel grey in the center of the rims setting it off, or maybe there’s some sort of fancy clear coat going on, pearlescent or something, but it really pops. Gorgeous car.
The Edsel got the bad rep because it overheated; an Edsel collector I know really likes his (and all the other “orphan” vehicles in his collection) and said the cooling system fix had to be done to any of them that didn’t go to museums, ie, if they are to be driven, the cooling system mod (whatever it was) has to be done.
The Falcon was a stodgy looking old lady sedan, but they shared engines with the Mustang models, and I think their curb weight was a bit lighter (the electrical system wasn’t the best either), so the Falcon would pretty much go like a raped ape. :’) I wouldn’t mind having one of the couple of those that ran through the hands of various family members back at that time.
There was nothing really “wrong” with the Edsel that other Ford makes didn’t also experience at the time. The styling was mocked into becoming controversial because GM launched a campaign to make it controversial, they were concerned about the competition the Edsel would pose to Pontiac. It was the front grille that was mocked, funny though how GM adapted a somewhat similar “snout” on Pontiac less than a decade later with no controversy.
One of my friends in high school had one of those falcons. His was pretty nice. It had a V-8, not sure which one and was also convertible.
There was this beautiful girl who rode the school bus with us and always would sit with me. After my friend got the convertible, he would stop by and pick her up every morning. They later got married.
He was actually a really good guy but darn I wished I had a nice car back then.
Convertibles should be standard equipment for young men with their first operator’s license. :’) It would jump the birth rate, and since there’s no point trying to get into college with their racial quota admission systems, and no prospect for jobs thanks to the Obama Recession, and no incentive for higher pay thanks to the Obama Tax Hikes, people would get married younger and have more kids but spaced further apart (due to expense). :’)
I ended up marrying an even more beautiful girl, actually she couldn’t have been too much prettier as Anita was about a 9.
Unfortunately both his and my wife died at a young age. Anita left 3 very pretty girls who were athletic which they probably got from their Father.
I did get to ride in his V-8 Falcon a couple of times and you were right. It would run like a striped ape.
