Abandoned 27 years ago, ‘Burger King Baby’ finds mother

A woman abandoned as a newborn 27 years ago in an Allentown, Pennsylvania, fast-food restaurant bathroom has been reunited with her birth mother after a social media blitz, local media reported on Wednesday.

Katheryn Deprill, left in the Burger King bathroom only hours after she was born, met her birth mother on Monday in a lawyer’s office, she told WFMZ television in an interview.

Deprill said her birth mother, who she did not identify, recounted getting pregnant after being raped while on a trip abroad and giving birth in her childhood bedroom at the age of 17. Her parents did not know she was pregnant and she was afraid to tell them, she said.

“She left me somewhere she knew I’d be found. She did not want to throw me away,” Deprill told the station.

It’s much better than many women do. I read a story once about a woman (not an American, she was from somewhere in Asia, but I forget where, China? Vietnam? someplace like that). Her mother abandoned her in some dirty old tenement stairway. But she was very happy to be alive.

I wish people would stop putting ‘birth’ and ‘biological’ in front of mother and father.

I'm okay with that modifier. Her real mother is the one who raised her, and her birth mother is the one who delivered her full term and permitted her to live rather than taking the convenient way out with an abortion. While I don't understand giving up a child, even after rape (if that was true), I think we should cut birth mothers as much slack as possible and thank them for taking the compassionate path.

Those of us who adopt children are the legal parents, the mother and father in terms of law if not in biological fact.

I think the emotional and physical facts are much more important than the legalities.

Adoptive parents are the real parents.

Just because the baby was rescued and adopted and turned out wee does not absolve her.

Just do everyone a favor -- especially unborn children -- and steer clear of any pro-life activities, since it's obvious your only motivation is self-congratulatory.
