Man restoring '59 Chevy finds 50-year-old love letter — and delivers it

Last year's auction of 500-odd cars from Lambrecht Chevrolet in Nebraska — including some 50 ancient ones with barely any miles — spread the collection into a diaspora of rust across the world. One lucky buyer took his 1959 Chevy Bel Air home to Indiana and promptly began tearing it down for a restoration — only to find a mystery inside: a love letter, more than half a century old, that he decided should be reunited with its owner.

Hub McCann: " " Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honour, courage and virtue mean everything ; that power and money ... money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this.... that love....true love never dies ! Remember that boy ... remember that. Doesn't matter if it is true or not, a man should believe in those things , because those are the things worth believing in...... got that ? " Secondhand Lions (2003

Nice story. All those Lambrecht cars have a story to tell.

We had a '59 Chevy Bel Aire in our family too. I'd love to have one again. For the memories.

Great story. The article also mentioned that the new owner has posted a utube time-lapse vid of the restoration...they didn’t link to that, though. That would be cool to see.

Here's my 1957 Bel Air. I'm working on it, it actually looks better now. I find memories in every dent I pull.

The heart of Secondhand Lions is encapsulated in a speech that Hub McCann gives to young Walter . We first hear of this speech , which Garth McCann calls the “Everything a boy needs to know about becoming a man” speech , when Hub delivers it to the young hoods after he initially beats them up, then brings them home and feeds them.

Searched YouTube under '59 chevy restoration'. Popped right up:

Worth watching. Two movies in one as the lead actors retell their adventures from earlier days.

Had a '58 while stationed at Fort Riley 10 years later. Wish I still had it. There are a number of vehicles I have had over the years that would add up to quite a sum today. Young Freepers should take heed and if at all possible keep and protect your cars and maybe buy some popular models from a few years back. It could pay off later.
