Westboro Baptist Church to picket Oklahoma liquor store over sign mocking Fred Phelps' death
upi ^ | March 28, 2014 | Evan Bleier

Posted on 03/28/2014 9:50:25 AM PDT by JoeProBono

The Westboro Baptist Church is saying that it will picket an Oklahoma liquor store that put up a sign mocking the death of the group’s founder, Fred Phelps.

Phelps died on March 20 at the age of 84.

To commemorate the occasion, Moore Liquor decided to have a champagne sale and posted a sign reading, "Fred Phelps 1929-2014, Champagne 10% off! Not a coincidence."

The WBC doesn’t find the sign funny and plans to protest. The store sounds fine with it.

"I was a little reticent about putting up the sign in the first place because I have two good parents who raised me not to speak ill of the dead, but I couldn’t help feeling that the world was a better place without Fred Phelps," store owner Bryan Kerr told the Huffington Post.

"He did so much to spread his special brand of hatred while bastardizing Christian principles that I thought it might be appropriate to recognize his lack of corporeal existence with some celebration. As a Christian myself, I truly hope that Fred found some peace with God and maybe even had a change of heart before passing."

The day of the protest, he should have a 50% off sale to celebrate their protest.

Watch as the protesters are ran over by capitalism.

I think this will backfire on WBC big time. When people want alcohol, they will support their convenient location and laugh in the faces of the WBC protesters. There is no moral outrage involved comparable to WBC’s wicked protests at military funerals.

Sounds like this liquor store owner will have a lot of money to count in the days ahead. Hope he’s well stocked on champagne.

WBC picketing Moore Liquor will undoubtedly be good for business, I’m sure the owner is pleased.

I'm a little confused here.

Let's see if I can make sense of it.

The Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket a liquor store.

I thought Baptists weren't drinkers. So, what are they trying to accomplish?

Nope, can't make sense of it at all.

As much as I think Phelps was totally wrong, and as much as I think Phelps deserved retribution, I think disturbing a funeral is such terrible form that I’d avoid his methods.

Indeed. I believe the "Westboro Baptist Church" may be a false-flag operation--sort of like the Monarchist Union of Central Russia, a supposed anti-Communist resistance organization in the Soviet Union during the 1920's that was actually run by the Soviet secret police.

There are too many people here taking Phelps and his ‘church’ at face value.

Their real goal was not their stated goal at all.

They were nothing but a front group, funded by dems, to make the real churches and religious people look bad.

The group is a cult.

Baptists you are thinking of live by an ancient book called the bible. These people have a little book Fred Phelps wrote which they use instead.

In America, there is nothing to stop a cult from calling themselves whatever they want.

Actually, they aren't crazy in the sense you're saying. The Phelps family is comprised of lawyers. They're in it for the money. Phelps might as well be a brand. They have a consistent strategy:

Phelps was a disbarred lawyer, founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm, and a former civil rights activist. He sought public office four times as a member of the Democratic Party. In the election for United States Senator for Kansas in 1992 , he received 49,416 votes (30.8%), coming in second after Gloria O'Dell (who subsequently lost to later presidential candidate Bob Dole). Phelps and his followers frequently picketed various events, such as military funerals , gay pride gatherings, high-profile political gatherings, university commencement ceremonies, performances of The Laramie Project, mainstream Christian gatherings and concerts with which he had no affiliation, arguing it was their sacred duty to warn others of God's anger, leading a group of motorcycle riders to form the Patriot Guard Riders to provide a non-violent, volunteer buffer between the protesters and mourners. Christian's shouldn't picket anyone's funeral. Not out of respect for the dead but out of respect for the family and friends of those losing their loved one. Such poor taste.

I'll say one thing for the old geezer, he sure changed laws in a lot of states - Missouri created a law where people can't picket funerals I think 2 hours before and 2 hours after (or 1 hour before and 1 hour after) so he left a legacy of sorts.

This is an advertising godsend to this liquor store, worth more than 10 years worth of conventional advertising. They should run with it for all it’s worth.

They might even post novelty drink recipes, like a tequila sunrise with a raisin on the bottom, called “Fred Phelps in Hell”.
