When NASA astronauts were suiting up to go to space in the 1960s, they had to make a big decision before they explored the world above us: How large of a man are you?

Getting it wrong could damage the mission.

You're alone in a tiny space capsule with other men long before Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell" or Obama's "sashaying while marching is mandatory". There is only one acceptable answer.

If so, why was it necessary for them to estimate?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Kind of falls in line with the ‘youngster’ working the register and he ‘assumes’ the person in front of him is a ‘Senior Citizen’.
Think if they are not trained to, most have enough sense to let the person ID him/herself as a SR CIT rather than ‘insult’ the customer no matter how obvious.

My ex-wife has found the ‘perfect storm’. If it is assumed she is, she gets ‘insulted’ and if they don’t offer she gets ‘insulted’.

To think, I put up with that logic for almost 45 years...

OF COURSE, she also ‘put up’ with ME for that amount of time. HA HA

It was amusing, but not up to standards set by the others.

During the cold war, we used to send large condoms to Russia and label them “small”...for propaganda’s sake.

Explains why there were no African-Americans in the original lineup.

The scene with Shepard waiting atop that rocket, juxtaposed with scenes of others drinking coffee - classic. “Jose, permission granted to wet your diaper at any time, son.”

That movie is just classic. One of my favorites.
That and Apollo 13. I was 7-1/2 when Apollo 13 happened. Back in the day when boys had real men to have as hero's.

I remember one time, having the house to myself one weekend. Went to the hotdog joint and got a couple of hotdogs, came home, popped some popcorn and put in The Right Stuff. When that was done, I order a pizza, then watched Apollo 13.

(I've done similar with Star Wars [the first trilogy] and Band Of Brothers)

I guess the real quote didn’t make it in the movie.
“Who’s the real wetback now.?”

Actually, that line did make it to the film. It follows the scene where the engineers are watching all the sensors in Shepard’s suit react to the moisture rising up his back.
