Women in peacekeeping [UN]

As peacekeeping has evolved to encompass a broader humanitarian approach, women have become increasingly part of the peacekeeping family.

Women in Peacekeeping: A Growing Force

Women are deployed in all areas – police, military and civilian – and have made a positive impact on peacekeeping environments, both in supporting the role of women in building peace and protecting women's rights.

In all fields of peacekeeping, women peacekeepers have proven that they can perform the same roles, to the same standards and under the same difficult conditions, as their male counterparts. It is an operational imperative that we recruit and retain female peacekeepers.

In 1993, women made up 1% of deployed uniformed personnel. In 2012 , out of approximately 125,000 peacekeepers, women constitute 3% of military personnel and 10% of police personnel in UN Peacekeeping missions. While the UN encourages and advocates for the deployment of women to uniformed functions, the responsibility for deployment of women in the police and military lies with Member States. UN Police Division launched 'the Global Effort' to recruit more female police officers into national police services and into UN police operations around the world. The goal is to have 20% of female police by 2014.

Striving towards gender parity amongst UN staff is a priority for the UN Secretary-General. At the UN Headquarters in 2012, 48 per cent of staff were women and 52 per cent men, with the most disparity showing at the mid and senior levels. In peacekeeping operations and special political missions, the figures are more challenging, with women making up only 29 percent of international and 17 per cent of national staff.

These statistics have remained largely unchanged over the past few years. During 2013, the Departments of Field Support, Peacekeeping Operations and Political Affairs undertook a project called "Bridging the Civilian Gap in Peace Operation" to better understand the barriers to attracting, retaining and advancing female staff in the field. The report has been published and recommendations are being developed for implementation in 2014 and beyond. With civilian field staff representing 53 per cent of all UN Secretariat staff, an increase in the number of civilian women in peace operations will help towards increasing the number of female staff serving with the United Nations at large.

For its part, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) continues to respond to the call in all Women, Peace and Security mandates to increase the numbers of women in peacekeeping by advocating for the deployment of more women. However the ultimate responsibility for getting more women into the military peacekeeping lies with the individual countries that contributing troops and police.

Why is it important to have female peacekeepers?

Female peacekeepers act as role models in the local environment, inspiring women and girls in often male-dominated societies to push for their own rights and for participation in peace processes.

The increased recruitment of women is critical for:

The presence of women peacekeepers can also:

We have been reading the same story for more than 40 years.

No matter what, it is always a "positive" effect. It is just tape recording loop from the Ministry of Truth.

I notice they haven’t sent them into Central African Republic or Democratic Republic of Congo. Probably not too many volunteering for border duty between Pakistan and India.

"In all fields of peacekeeping, women peacekeepers have proven that they can perform the same roles, to the same standards and under the same difficult conditions, as their male counterparts."

Really? So in protracted combat operations, they hold up just as well as men? No sanitary issues? The fact that women have softer bones and less muscle mass isn't impeding anything? The fact that men are instinctively hunters and women are not isn't a problem?

Hrm...

don’t forget whether they handle the emotional stress and combat stress as well. they do not.

bottom line is it sucks we have to send MEN to do this kind of work, not all make it back, many are messed up and all are changed. sending women shouldn’t enter the equation.

My granddaughter teaches at an international school in Accra Ghana. This is where the African headquarters for the UN. She has taught several of the African Ambassador’s children. She is a devout Christain, and has the Ambassador’s ear. Praying that God will use her to make a difference in these heathern countries.

I agree with you both 100% - However, the Leftie/Marxists don’t care how many are killed or messed up of either sex. The more, the better in their eyes. Justifies the UN’s sorry existence, and their member states have a nice place to meet to discuss the atrocities they cause. My eye teeth to have the UN relocated out of this country.

I think women are an essential component of a peacekeeping op, for the reasons already stated, a war fighting op might be a different story.

I had an encounter with a female LEO. She started to draw down on me. Why? I happened to be in the area where someone who did not even look like me (6 inches shorter, different race) had urinated in public. Fortunately, the male LEO with her backed the thugcop bitch down.

He got promoted to Ohio State Highway Patrol.

She got the city sued for abuse of force and was fired. Probably could not get a job as a mall cop now.

I have known women who earned their position in the military, including a Marine who trashed a serial rapist (none of the blood on the walls and floor was hers). But it is rare.

Really? So in protracted combat operations, they hold up just as well as men?

Let's keep in mind, they're talking about male UN 'peacekeepers', who are best known for sexually exploiting the locals.

In all, a low bar to clear.
