A cup of Earl Grey 'as good as statins' at fighting heart disease, study finds
Telegraph ^ | 3/30/14 | Alice Philipson

Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract - a key ingredient in the hot drink - is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol.

Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol.

They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease.

The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in patients.

Researchers from Italy's University of Calabria, writing for the Journal of Functional Foods, used concentrations of HMGF on the proteins which cause heart disease and 'bad' cholesterol.

Whoops...Cholesterol is 240...the same as 30 years ago.

I take Red Yeast Rice to lower cholesterol. It contains a naturally occurring statin, but much less than one would get in a prescription. After a couple of months, I brought my total reading down from 233 to 197, with an increase in my "good" cholesterol.

Oatmeal keeps my cholesterol down below maximums, but it is nice to know there is another way besides statins to do the trick. I was prescribed statins several years ago and refused to take them after reading about the side effects.

I am on my fourth statin. I got the leg muscle/aches from
generic simvastatin, Crestor & generic Lipitor. I am now on generic pravastatin, I think. I have lost track. I tried high doses of Niacin prior to those. My HDL has always been high as a percentage. It seems like the statin I am taking now is starting to bother me after being on it for close to a year.

What does the cherry juice do?

I guess I’m going to live forever, drink the stuff all day when I’m home. I really like Taylors of Harrogate’s Yorkshire Earl Grey, anybody else have any “classic” favorite Earl Grey’s blend to recommend?

How much Red Yeast rice do you take?

I take WEIDER RED YEAST RICE which I get at Costco. I take two caplets with breakfast and 2 with dinner. That's 1200 mg twice a day.

He has arthritis. The pain has definitely lessened as I can tell by looking at him while doing things...and he concurs.

I don't know how old you are but there was a study saying older women with higher than norm chol is just fine. I think you have to look at the whole picture...BP, sugar & chol.

One of my buds WAS on statins...stopped taking them....same thing...leg/muscle cramps. He's 85.

Thank you both for your suggestions. The main side effect of atorvastatin (generic Lipitor) for me has been weakness and loss of muscle tone, and fatigue, which may just be related to the muscle weakness. I always prefer the treatment with the least amount of drugs if it will work for me.
