Idaho, Wyoming poised to get 80 mph speed limits [w/video]

You should be able to drive across the Northwestern part of the United States a little more quickly in the coming months. Idaho and Wyoming have just passed laws to raise some interstate speed limits to 80 miles per hour.

The Idaho law goes into effect on July 1, but there could be a delay because the Idaho Transportation Department is still conducting safety surveys to decide where to raise limits. It might be late summer before drivers actually see a change. According to a report from local television news station KMVT, the department actually opposed the bill, but it was pushed through by the state's legislature. Now, the agency has to find a way to implement the change. (Scroll down to watch a video of a KMVT news broadcast explaining the development).

Per capita traffic fatalities in “red” states are far higher than in “blue” states. http://vehicle-fatalities.findthedata.org/

wifeys newish car has firm suspension, fat tires, etc and has a great sweet spot @ 85. Can really make some good time and then ya get off the Interstate onto a 60mph two lane that feels awfully slow.

“85 mph in a 41 mile portion of a recently completed toll road between Austinand San Antonio Texas. So 90 in some locations may not be out of the questionat some future time.”

I drive that stretch of road frequently. I am doing 95-100 and get passed.

We should emulate Germany and Austria, which have no speed limit on their freeways.

Don't put that to test in Austria...

Drive the German Autobahn sometime...in a car that can handle it.

It will either scare you into incontinence or make US “free”-ways feel like school zones by comparison.

is “per capita” the correct ratio here? How many people in NYC own cars?

When I was a kid it was either TN or KY that had no speed limit. My dad loved driving through there because he could make such good time.

Don’t worry, it isn’t mandatory, and there will always be lanes for those going slower.
