MH370: New last words from cockpit: 'Good night Malaysian three seven zero'
CNN ^ | April 1, 2014 | Catherine E. Shoichet, Faith Karimi and KJ Kwon, CNN

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- They were words heard around the world as investigators searched for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

Weeks ago, Malaysian authorities said the last message from the airplane cockpit was, "All right, good night."...

There's only one problem. It turns out, it wasn't true.

On Monday, Malaysia's Transport Ministry said the final voice transmission from the cockpit of Flight 370 was actually "Good night Malaysian three seven zero."

Malaysian authorities gave no explanation for the discrepancy between the two quotes. And authorities are still trying to determine whether it was the plane's pilot or copilot who said them.

The new language is routine and is not a sign that anything untoward occurred aboard the flight, said CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo.

But the change in wording weeks into the search for the missing plane raises questions about how Malaysian officials have handled the investigation.

"It speaks to credibility issues, unfortunately," Schiavo said.

"We haven't had a straight, clear word that we can have a lot of fidelity in," said Michael Goldfarb, former chief of staff at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

"We have the tragedy of the crash, we have the tragedy of an investigation gone awry and then we have questions about where we go from here."

No matter what the pilots' last words were, it's hard to understand what they mean without more details from authorities about what they said and how they said it, CNN aviation analyst Miles O'Brien told "The Lead with Jake Tapper" on Monday.

"Without the preceding information ... either the transcript or the recordings themselves, it's difficult to know what any of that really means," he said. "And that's the problem with this investigation, which has been so opaque."

What I’ve been thinking all along. This plane has been repainted and renumbered “magic carpet” in Iran getting ready for the 2nd coming of Allah.

NO DEBRIS??? I guess the next scenario we’ll have promoted is that the plane actually landed like the one on the Hudson and suffered no damage, only sank intact, no debris. Yeah right, in the South Indian Ocean with 30 foot waves routine.

If the damn thing crashed in the ocean there would be SOME floating debris.

So, someone please explain to me (I only have a public education) how anyone with half a brain can get the last words wrong?? And, didn’t they spend a lot of time figuring out who spoke the wrong words???

And, the search was initially north (even though they knew the plane turned south), then west, then south, then not so far south.

The Malaysians are either incompetent, hiding something, or (my preference) both!!!

That’s what my hubby thinks. He thinks there may have been valuable cargo aboard that was worth killing the passengers over.

The other question on that transcript is that it appears that ATC is calling out to MH370 at 01:01:19 and it doesn’t respond for 7 minutes and then when it does it just repeats an earlier transmission.

Then at 01:08:00 ATC calls out to them again and MH370 never responds.

Then 10 minutes go by with no response from MH370.

Then at 01:19:24 ATC tells them “please contact Hu Chi Minh City”.

I suspect that ATC suspected a problem and if they didn’t they should have.

And I also suspect that there was no signoff at 01:19:29 — period. That claim is pure Malaysian fiction to cover their rear ends for not acting on these suspicions sooner.

This story is almost done - and it’s turning into a “DB Cooper” story now, with all the crazy speculation.

And in a few days this list will be done. I don’t think we’ll hear much more since the Chinese have come out so strongly that they’re all dead! This will join DB Cooper in the mystery hall of fame.

Me too. It sounds like something the tower would say to a plane leaving its airspace. I wouldn't be surprised if the Malaysian government got this wrong.

You are correct. That exchange would never pass muster as a radar handoff. Normally ATC would ask the aircrew to “squawk flash” prior to a handoff.

As I thought about this, I’m surprised to see just “MH” being transmitted. Keep in mind I’ve been away from controlling for a few decades but I would expect to hear “Mike Hotel 370” or “Malaysian Heavy 370”. I’ve lost a great deal of my hearing because we had the radios turned so loud to try to understand what was said, so probably the radios are much clearer now and there’s no need to use phonic call signs.

This is news?

These people are dead.

I agree we should continue to search. But they are dead. This is not news. They are scraping at the bottom of the barrel. Time to move on to important items.
