Tiger Woods will miss the Masters after undergoing back surgery earlier this week for a pinched nerve that has been hurting him for several months, the world's No. 1 player said Tuesday on his website.

It will be the first time in 20 years that Woods will not play in the event.

The microdiscectomy was performed Monday by neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Rich in Park City, Utah. The statement said Woods will begin "intensive rehabilitation and soft-tissue treatment" within a week, and the goal is for him to return to competition "sometime this summer."

Back surgery is a serious thing. Woods breaking Jack Nicklaus' records is looking more and more remote.

He’ll need to take the rehab slowly.

There will be muscle mass loss, and that too, must be taken slowly.

The connective tissue does not regenerate as quickly as the muscle.

But could be mounting a serious attempt at Wilt Chamberlains record?

Back surgery is a serious thing.

Very so for a golfer. May never get close to his form again.

Well, guess I won’t be watching the Masters this year. Unless John Daly is competing for the jacket over the weekend.

Even more reason for me to watch. I despise him.

Is this a result of the extreme conditioning he participated in during his younger years?

the whole creation called “Tiger Woods” ended when Earl passed away. Jack’s 18 is safe.

Golfers have back problems all the time.

Jack Nicklaus also had back surgery.

How is he the “world’s #1 golfer”? He hasn’t won a major in years and won’t win one this year either.

I hope so! You know Jack finished second in majors 19 times I believe, eight times by one shot. Over twenty some years. It's an incredible record for consistency.

One of my favorite Nicklaus stories... He won The Open at Baltusrol in 1980. That Sunday was also one of his kids’ birthdays, so the celebratory US Open victory dinner was at a McDonald’s in New Jersey.

I'm just curious as to why, is it because he dared to behave so much like all the athletes, showing one face to the public and another in private? Would it be different if he was a basketball or football player instead, because lying and infidelity is expected from them? I think it's okay for us to dislike anyone, hell were only human, but I have say I find the Tiger hate a little amusing.

Jack Nicklaus is a 100% class act — something Eldrick never had.

Woods won four times last year. Granted no majors but at least one WGC tournament. Was still Number 1 on the money list. With the majors being split among four golfer who didn’t do much else.... Voila, he’s still Number 1!
