It's good to finally be back.

Finally!

I was without a computer all week last week and then found out frday that the old computer was beyond repair. I got this one for a good price and it seems a much better computer; videos play well for one thing. Right now there are only two problems:

1)Although I set up my two e-mail accounts on Outlook Express correctly and exactly as I'm supposed to, one of them refuses to work (fortunately, not my main one). The other one resolutely refuses to do so even though there is absolutely no logical reason for this. Also, this is after two phone calls and two remote control sessions. One of them got the bad account to work once, then it stopped again. However, the main account is still working and even if it weren't I could still access my e-mail on the 'Net (which is what I'll have to do for the other one). All in all, this is not a big deal.

2)HOWEVER--this one is (to me at least). For some inexplicable reason the fonts of all the web pages I view look splotched and faded, much as would a newspaper or magazine printed with ink in the process of drying out. While I expect I can get used to it with time, this is a biiiiig pain-in-the-tail for me. Does anyone out there know how to darken and solidify the fonts one views on the 'Net? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!

Adjust the screen resolution…

That doesn't help either. Besides, I like my letters big and easy to read.

By any chance have you looked at your screen settings in Control Panel, if first suggestion does not work?

I can't find a "screen settings" folder in the control panel. Perhaps it is inside one of the other folders? I looked in "system" but didn't see any font adjustments.

First, make certain the machine is fully updated. Go into updates and look at ‘optional’ updates - could be an updated driver for your monitor or vid card is available. Seriously, do not make any changes until this step is proven with pretty high confidence.

Secondly, is the font problem only in your browser, or is it system wide? Desktop icons? documents? Are you on a flat-screen monitor or an old school one?

Take a picture with a cell phone and post it.

I don't have a cell phone or a scanner. Sorry.

Outlook express brings back some bad memories of getting called by other people.

Another legacy program is earthlink’s e-mail program. It doesn’t work in windows 7. The spousal unit who deleted almost nothing had to go through 1000s of messages to port over to Gmail. That lightweight earthlink client was never meant to hold gigs of data.

I installed xp on a virtual machine with the client and left it. It took a long time but a lesson was learned.

Yes I have, and the problem is the same at every zoom setting. It is present in all three of my monitors and even in my own personal documents. This is some sort of system-wide problem.

Ironically, pictures look great.

1)It is system-wide.

2)It's a flat screen monitor.

Try Control Panel and then click ‘Display’ and try an adjustment there.

Update your monitor drivers - depending on your version of Windows the instructions are usually something like this:Good luck ...

It sounds like a driver issue. Short of that, try
Control Panel - Display - Adjust ClearType Text. Check the box to turn this feature on.

1)It is system-wide.

Which OS?

Win8 has known problems with blurry fonts...

Have you already tried tuning Clear Type?

2)It's a flat screen monitor.

I will reiterate the importance of monitor drivers where flat screens are concerned. Be sure.

‘Nother thing:

Use the recommended screen resolution and refresh rate - if that makes things too small to see (for you) then adjust system wide font using the ‘display’ options. I use the ‘medium’ setting in Win 7

Try Control Panel and then click ‘Display’ and try an adjustment there.

No good. That's the same panel I get by right-clicking on my desktop, and I've been messing with it all day.

I'd truly like to do that (it sounds like good advice), but unfortunately there is no "Adjust ClearType Text" option anywhere available there.

You are low on toner. Get some black toner and pour it into the monitor. It should work perfectly then.

I really wish I could use “clear type,” but apparently Windows XP doesn’t have it. There is no blank in which one may type “clear type” anywhere in the “display” panel.
