Skydiver’s Helmet Cam Captures a Falling Meteor Almost Hitting Him
PETAPIXEL ^ | april 03,2014 | Michael Zhang

Posted on 04/03/2014 1:21:29 PM PDT by SWAMPSNIPER

For the first time ever, a meteor has been captured on camera falling through the sky after it has finished burning. And that’s not all: the baseball-sized space rock nearly slammed into the man behind the camera.

The reporterette in the longer video from the source is not guilty. She seems dressed pretty casual for an interview - maybe that’s how they roll in Scandy land?

“No way that could be a meteor, no flames, no smoke, no nothin...”

Read the article from the geologist — no fire:

“Most of the time, meteoroids burn up after entering our planet’s atmosphere, but sometimes larger ones survive the journey and enter what’s known as “dark flight.” This is when the rock stops burning up and begins to fall to the ground at terminal velocity. Amundsen estimates that the meteor was traveling at around 186 mph when it whizzed past Helstrup.”

I don’t buy it.

Not even smoke?

This whole “dark meteorite” thing has as much stones to it as “dark energy” and “dark matter” and “dark light”!

Other than the fact it’s way above ground, it looks like a plain, ordinary rock to me. And I am gonna be pretty hard to convince otherwise!

If this rock and cracked him on the noggin and knocked him cold, then he plowed into the ground with the usual tissue damage, what are the chances the coroner would have reached the meteorite scenario for cause of death?

If you view the video you will see the airplane as a small white blip miles in the distance before the rock passes. In order for the rock to be proximate to him the airplane would have to have been practically hovering above him.

Or do you think someone can throw a rock that close from several miles away?

Piece of something that came off his chute when it opened. It would have had to be dense like a rock to fall like that.

The helmet probably would have had a mark on it, but the odds against it are so low that the suggested explanation wouldn’t have been believed — even with that cam footage, which might have shown the rock hurtling on.

I know what you’re saying, but it did get me thinkin’ - I’m going to guess that your odds are probably pretty much the same anywhere outside to have a random object from space fall on you. But let’s say the Angel of the Lord came down and informed you that at some point in your life, your person would be struck by a meteor. From then on, I think your best chance to survive is to skydive as much as possible. If the meteor is going to slow end of the terminal velocity ranges listed here and you yourself are traveling terminal velocity, you could really minimize impact damage.
