Man executed with controversial drug despite lawyer's appeal
DailyMail ^ | 3 April 2014 | By Associated Press

A serial killer was put to death Thursday in Texas after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his lawyers' demand that the state release information about where it gets its lethal injection drug.

Tommy Lynn Sells, 49, was the first inmate to be injected with a dose of newly replenished pentobarbital that Texas prison officials obtained to replace an expired supply of the powerful sedative.

Sells declined to give a statement. As the drug began flowing into his arms inside the death chamber in Huntsville, Sells took a few breaths, his eyes closed and he began to snore. After less than a minute, he stopped moving. He was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m. CDT - 13 minutes after being given the pentobarbital.

Or in defense-attorney speak: "a cruel and unusual death."

This is one time when the statement, “What difference does it make?” should be front and center.

The people who are protesting the justified ending of this murder’s life seem to have no trouble with Gosnell severing the spinal cord of a baby.

While executing a person is doubtless just in this case, I doubt that Jesus Christ would show any glee whatsoever at such an event, and, further, He would probably rebuke anyone who did show joy at the killing of another human being, however sinful such a person might have been. Christ would likely consider such a celebratory response shameful.

As a Christian, I felt led by the Spirit to make this observation...

The people who are protesting the justified ending of this [murderer's] life seem to have no trouble with Gosnell severing the spinal cord of a baby.

Just to be clear: I'm not protesting the justified ending of this murderer's life.

I'm simply protesting the glee, as I was led by the Spirit to do.

And, to be perfectly clear, I have a major problem with Gosnell severing the spinal cord of a baby.

Justice can be pleasing without being gloated over.

I'm simply asserting that Christ would show no such glee.

Thus, in an effort to emulate Him, I also do not take glee in this event.

I did understand what you were saying. I have always had a real problem understanding why the person who protests the execution of a murderer doesn’t blink an eye or say a word when a baby who had never hurt anyone is aborted.

I may very well have to answer to God at judgment day for my view on execution but I have always felt that anyone who takes the life of someone else without justification deserves to have their life ended.

Yep quick and clean and if he got himself right with the Almighty then who could ask for a better death. This here is not the end - death row can be the most merciful place on earth if those on it take time to consider their evil deeds and repent and then you get to leave like going to sleep. I’m not sure they deserve such a sweet end. I take no comfort or happiness in another’s fall and I will let God judge the final outcome!

Sargon,

I agree with your statements regarding this rephrensible excuse for a human beings execution. As one who has had to witness first hand the results this this type of individuals actions, I wholeheartedly agree with the death penalty and its result.

As one who is trying to rise above my own character defects, I work hard at not finding joy in the taking of a life, no matter the reason. I rationalize not lowering myself to this murders level by equating the death penalty to euthanizing a rabid animal. I find no joy in that act and look upon it as a necessary event. Not evil, but probably good because it is sparing another life of pain and misery.

If others believe it is necessary to bestow the same action upon the murderer, then so be it. Fortunately, we are on a forum where others differing opinions are SOMETIMES tolerated.

That does appear to provide biblical authority for capital punishment. Unfortunately, I would have been subject to the same fate as a mass murderer with the first time I stormed off to my room, slammed the door, and yelled, “Go to hell, Mom!”

I actually heard one of these talking heads the other day state that if the drug mixture is not pure it will violate his “Constitutional right to a painless death.”

I, of course, whipped out my Constitution since this was entirely new on me and I’ll be damned if I can’t find anywhere in the that document or any of the Amendments that states a condemned prisoner has the right to a painless death.

But I did see the “cruel and unusual punishments” part of the 8th Amendment like you mentioned. The thing that gets me with that Amendment is the word “and”.

Not “or”, “and”. This makes me think, if the punishment is cruel, but common, isn’t it still Constitutional? This opens up a lot of options in my opinion, and makes any argument for a painless death irrelevant.

A couple years ago a condemned man’s last words after the injection started were, “I can taste it.”

I had the same experience when I had my wisdom teeth out under a general anesthetic many years ago.

I assume the anesthetic reaches your lungs before it’s pumped to the brain.

I’ll guess that you breath out the pungent “medicinal” fragrance, and your sense of smell and possibly your sense of taste respond to it before you pass out.

In the moments before I passed out I had no anxiety, and when I woke up I had no sense of pain or any recollection of the procedure.

I “woke up” at home!

I have no memory of walking out of the clinic with my Dad.

I have no memory of talking to him, coherently by his account, the whole drive home.

And I have no memory of kissing my Mom, telling her I felt fine, then lying down for a nap.

Although I personally oppose the death penalty, lethal injection must be the most tranquil human death possible.

The only discomfort you might feel would be the anal plug and catheter that many states require.

This is going on 20 years of appeals. DNA & confession proved he did it.

He raped, strangled to death with her OWN SHOE LACES 8 year old Ashley ‘Nicki’ Read and then threw her body in the river. Even helped hunt for what was thought to be a missing child. Justice has been denied, her mom Debbie still grieves as there is no closure allowed by the Injustice system.

The process is no more cruel than that of putting a beloved diseased pet down. Just a OD of sleep meds will accomplish the elimination of a vermin.

Jesus told the 1 thief who believed in him he would see paradise, the other would see God’s judgement. There is only 1 unforgivable sin and that is to blaspheme the Holy Spirt, or Ghost.

Most criminals profess a conversions to get out of punishment.

Christ has to be in the heart, not mind.

Parent of a murdered child, friend of many who have had their Loved Ones murdered, retired Victims Advocate. Which is more painful the rape and strangulation of a 8 year old or the peaceful OD of sleep meds on the rapist/killer?

GOD will judge their redemption in the end. But justice still has to be carried out! Or you send the wrong message to would be killers, rapist of 8 year old little girls.
