Man wrongly jailed for 15 months until this video proved cop had lied

A wrongly imprisoned Dallas man, who just won his $1.1 million lawsuit against the city, would still be in jail if not for the discovery of video evidence, which proved that his arresting officer had attacked him and lied about it.

In December of 2009, Dallas police Officer Matthew Antkowiak was dispatched to break up a fight between two white men. But on his way to the scene, he saw a black man, 62-year-old Ronald Jones, crossing the street. Antkowiak claimed that Jones was throwing beer bottles. He stopped his car and approached Jones. According to the officer, Jones tried to choke him, provoking a fight that lasted until other officers arrived. Jones was arrested on assault charges and spent the next 15 months in prison, according to WFAA News 8.

The only problem? Antkowiak’s account was a complete lie — and eventually, footage from police dashboard cameras disproved it.

Cops seem to generally assume that people are lying to them. I return the favor. I see no reason to give a cop’s word any more credence than any other random person, which is to say not very much. No, I’m not a cop hater - I just have a healthy distrust of people in authority.

I’d star at that DA and let him know, “That $1.1 million...is going to defeat you in the next election, and you, too, Mayor.”

Isn't it odd that the Founding Fathers got along quite well without all these "swarms of officers harassing" them?

Isn't that why they revolted in the first place?

THIS crap is one reason why there is still a racial problem in America.

The average American has ignored or approved of the JBT tactics by law enforcement. Phone cams and dash cams are clearly documenting what black Americans have always said about cop behavior.

Now that LEO is so militarized and thuggish that every American is endangered by their aggressive and unconstitutional methods we suddenly get it.

If you wonder why so many black Americans blindly follow their race hustling leaders, look no further than youtube. JBT cops and race pimps exploiting it to the max.

That is actually the way you SHOULD look at it. It is the view closest to reality:

You will not believe how even telling the truth can convict you.

Go to Amazon.com or eBay.com and pay $30 for *any* dash cam.

Those are liberty cameras.

Just ask the Russians who use them ubiquitously.

Resigning?

The guy spent 15 months in jail. A resignation is clearly not sufficient.

It took a year for anyone to look at the dash cam? A whole bunch of people need to be fired!

He probably thought arresting one guy would be less work then dealing with two.

After all he did just want to get home safe.

LEOs are allowed by law to lie to you. However, they are not allowed to subvert justice or the law (yes there is a difference) by falsifying, ignoring, or destroying evidence or filing a false report.

But look at it from their point of view: the JBT and all his pals on the force who supported him and looked the other way got to go home safe that night.

And who knows? They might get the chance to shoot an innocent dog later on!

(/sarc)

Oh, and yes, I am quite serious about that one thing: Courts have ruled numerous times that LEOs can lie to you if it "solves the case" (brings the case to court), hopefully locking away a "bad guy".

THIS crap is one reason why there is still a racial problem in America.

It is not simply a matter of "race". LEOs today are of the mindset that anyone not a cop is one of only two things: Perps, or Uncaught Perps.

Why are they struggling to make race an issue here?

I believe Dallas once had a prosecutor who was famous for race based prosecutions.

This was not only a case of a crooked cop but a REALLY, really dumb one. Did he forget that his dash-cam would have shows the truth of what happened?

Why are they struggling to make race an issue here? Even if the cop had purely racist motives, he was wrong, got caught, and will now have to pay the consequences.

The race of the individuals was unnecessary. In a case of injustice like this, the victim deserves every bit of the compensation he got. The JBTs need to go to jail.

Period.

Race is and should be irrelevant. Behavior IS relevant.
