Stephen Colbert is the rumored top pick to replace David Letterman as host of Late Show on CBS. Letterman announced he plans to retire in the next year or so.

Colbert 'first engaged with network executives' while Letterman was still thinking about the best time to retire, Mashable reports.

Sources tell the website that CBS has spoken to other candidates - including Colbert's Comedy Central colleague Jon Stewart - but that Colbert is the 'front-and-center' pick for the job. They also say Colbert has not yet had any formal contract discussions nor is there an agreement in place.

Ugh. And. Ugh. People keep saying either Stewart or Colbert will replace Old Dirtyman.

Not happening. Neither of these comedy central creeps can really do a long day's work, late at night. Whatever you can say about DL, he could produce more than an hour of content a week.

Chelsea Handler, CBS in Talks for Late-Night Spot (Exclusive)

http://www.thewrap.com/cbs-david-letterman-chelsea-handler-late-show

Insider tells TheWrap that the star was already negotiating for a show with the network ahead of David Letterman’s retirement announcement

Chelsea Handler is in talks with CBS for a late-night talk show, an individual close to the producer and E! talk show host told TheWrap.

CBS contacted Handler to discuss the potential of hosting a syndicated show in the wake of her announcing this week that she’s leaving E! when her contract expires at the end of the year. But Handler has told CBS that she isn’t interested in that option. As a result, CBS then expressed interest in considering Handler for Craig Ferguson’s 12:30 a.m. slot.

Chelsea Handler

Who? Seriously, I'd never heard of her. Having just now done a search on her, I guess she has as good a chance as anyone to get the gig.

Given the fact that Colbert isn't funny, this should keep CBS's late night ratings in the basement they've become accustomed to during Letterman's dotage.

I have watched, maybe, 5 total minutes of Letterman since he has been on late night TV.

I would plan on watching the same or less of Colbert.

Chelsea looks good for someone 50ish. Too bad she’s still in her 30s.
