Posted on 04/07/2014 8:27:42 AM PDT by Bon of Babble
Two pit bulls broke through a fence in a Nevada community, entered a neighbor's home through a dog door and killed three dogs inside while the residents were away, animal control officers said.
Jennifer, a resident of the home in the Reno suburb of Spanish Springs returned Friday to find Jill, a black lab, Gucci, a shih tzu, and Buddy a Pekingese dead inside inside the house on Reiger Springs Drive.
The dogs were seized and their owner is facing a citation, said Barry Brode, director of Washoe County Animal Services. The pit bulls could be euthanized if a judge orders it.

In before the it’s not the breed it’s the owners.
BTW, If that happened to my pets, the pit bulls would have been euthanized on the spot.
The problem with pit bulls is that they are like bengal tigers. They make great pets, until they don’t. And when they turn, it’s not the same as a weiner dog turning. It’s a little more impactive to all concerned.
Not that I’m against the dogs. I would just like to see the owners made legally responsible for what they do. And I believe that is already the case.
DH said the same thing...about the owners of the dog...
Pit Bulls are sweet and well-behaved dogs. You do hear about the problem dogs.
The media never reports on owners who never have a problem with their pit bulls. This is Gresham’s Law applied to reporting on animals: bad news drives out good news.
Its unfair to tarnish all pit bulls as being a menace based on the actions of a few rogue dogs.
Pit bulls in the news today:
>>The pit bulls could be euthanized if a judge orders it.
They should have been euthanized already, and regardless of a judge’s order.
If someone’s dog did this to my dog, I would kill their dog immediately. If my own dog did this to another person’s dogs, I would kill my own dog immediately. There is no grey area in my view. Killer dogs have no place.
This was a dog allowed to run loose. Its the owner who should be responsible for the death of the child.
I have a German Shepherd and I never allow her off leash and certainly do not allow her to roam.
Sad to say, there are irresponsible dog owners out there.
If I had neighbors who own aggressive unsocialized pit bulls next door. A doggy door would be the last thing I would provide to make a disaster not only possible, but likely.
A shotgun would be my first investment.
No further comments would be useful. I am biting my tongue. It could have been worse.
This whole thing defies logic and has been in defiance of logic for a long, long time.
I will not own a dog that bites.
That said, no pit bulls. Not now not ever
And dog doors are a bad idea
With dog ownership comes great responsibility and you are liable and may be held criminally responsible if your dog injures or kills someone.
I love my dog but I know well enough this is a powerful animal.
I have never heard of shih-tzus attacking and killing other dogs. Or attacking and killing children. Or attacking and killing senior citizens. I have, however, heard of Pitbulls doing this on a regular basis.
Sorry, but it IS tghe breed and the instincts that are bred into them.
Just like a retriever will retrieve with little encouragement, a pitbull will kill with little encouragement or training, it is what their instincts tell them to do.
ayep! them doggie doors sure area a blessing! what could possibly go wrong? (burglars, skunks, etc...
From your link:
32 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2013. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 78% (25) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.
I see a pit bull not on a leash and I shoot him dead on the spot
All dogs bite. They are carnivores descended from wolves.
We humans must always be the alpha and set strict limits and teach our dogs not to bite.
Its not the breed - its how to owner socializes and trains the dog to be a good canine citizen.
Did you read the article, or excerpt, even?
Since you can’t tell for sure which ones are going to turn vicious, that’s a reasonable response.
Suffice to say, that all ghastly stories about problem killer dogs are contained in the statistics, regardless of breed. Pit Bulls are not singled out.
The statistics speak for themselves. No amount of delusional sugar coating can trump reality.
Time to join the real world. No amount of rationalizing can bring back to life the growing list of human and pet victims.
Islam isn’t evil, it’s just a few fanatics that you here about, overall you don’t hear about all the good ones.
Yup, sounds familiar.
If you’re afraid of showing a dog who is the boss of the pack, its best not to own one.
that’s the popular mantra, isn’t it?
however as the owner of multiple dogs, some will, some won’t bite. They all have the mouth and the teeth.
Problem dogs should be euthanized. I’m not condoning the dog’s behavior. All I wrote was the breed shouldn’t be stigmatized.
A lot of people own pit bulls without a problem.
Why do these pit people always seem to have SO MANY animals in their homes? They’re like these pathological pet hoarders.
I suppose the dogs IN THEIR HOUSE were provoking the pit bulls, right? They could hear them, so they demolished a fence to go kill what they heard. Otherwise they are sweet harmless little doggies? Look, I’m dog people, my two Maltepoos sleep in my bed and I cook for them more than I cook for myself, Pit bulls MIGHT have been trustworthy dogs way back when, but they are not now. The breed has been ruined by selective breeding FOR VIOLENCE. I doubt there is a pit bull alive that does not have a fighting, violent dog in its bloodline. WHY would anyone-in light of such stories and disdain of the breed-CHOOSE a pit bull over the countless other breeds of dogs to raise and love? It is the very dangerous appearance and aggressive nature that is desired in most cases. It’s having Godzilla on a leash, appearing as ‘master’ of something society considers dangerous. It’s ego,IMO. I can see NO other reason for an intelligent person to choose a pit bull over any other large dog( if large is what you like).Great Danes are bigger, so are St Bernards and Afghan hounds and even Collies. You’re not going to breed a dog’s nature out-even mixes show traits of their parents. Pointers point, herders have the herd instinct and pit bulls of today are ALL, ALL related to a fighting dog unless you get a show quality animal from a breeder who can prove many generations with no violent dogs in the bloodline. And that is not what most people buy/acquire.
Charging through fences and into homes to kill? Goodbye dogs-and the owners( once incarcerated) should be sued until they can’t afford a tent to live in. Hurt my pups and God help you!
I understand what you are trying to say. Here's the problem, though: a vet once explains to me that ANY dog that's alive and has teeth WILL bite under the right circumstances.
I agree with you, though, that I would not own a dog which is inclined to be aggressive, and pit bulls certainly meet that criterion.
Back when I was a pup in the South, and incredibly old black man passed on this nugget of wisdom to me: “Any dog with teeth will bite”...
What's the big deal?
If 6% of any population commits 78% of all killings, it's just a coincidence!

Teach the dog not to bite. Most people don’t need a guard dog, they want a family companion.
Don’t acquire a dog from a BYB. You don’t know what you’re getting. Buy a dog from a reputable breeder or your animal shelter.
All pit-bulls should be tossed in a trash compactor, crushed, and sent to the landfill.
Let's make shooting those owners automatic.
I had a neighbor with 2 mean pits that kept trying to break the fence and get at my dog. I told him if they got in my yard and killed my dog I would be coming after him. (he got the message) He chained his dogs up and moved shortly after.
But let a police officer do this, in the interest of public safety, and he is excoriated and his head demanded by some "conservatives."
Did you read post 16? Did you understand it? I think you're shooting for the Willie Green militant ignorance award.
It was a dog that did what centuries of selective breeding intended it to do: attack something. You just can't dismiss the instincts bred into dogs: pointers and setters point birds, retrievers retrieve, border collies herd animals., etc., etc.
first bite and they are gone
I want love from dogs
don’t want a guard dog that kids need to be cautious of
my mil had a nasty little wire haired terrier that hated kids when mine were little
the kids of course wanted to pet her and that little varmint would snap at them
none of that crap for me
I already suffered through having a little dog that was a total pain in the butt, circling my bother and snapping at my mil and nipped my mom in the boob. Never again. Zero tolerance.
I can’t read anymore.
May God bless this trio of lovely dogs. May they know they are remembered and prayed for. You are in His arms, my darling ones, and one day you will be reunited with all those that you love. You are now whole, and you will be safe and cared for forever.
Some people want macho dogs or dogs that look tough. Its a valid human desire.
But some people breed dogs to engage in illegal dog-fighting and that’s a recipe for disaster.
I have a big dog that looks like a wolf but my dog is strictly a family dog.
I’m against pit bulls.
Enough already with the murder and mayhem, there are plenty of other less lethal dogs to be adopted instead.
I do not give one good crap....no one tells me how or if I can protect me and mine. More to the point....I do not care if St Peter owned the dog...Said dog is dead !
Did you read what I wrote?
The dogs are not at fault so much as people who don’t take care to discipline their dogs and keep them at their side.
Bad dog owners give good dog owners a bad name through their actions.
And I’m sorry when an animal takes a human life. We need to hold dog owners accountable for their animals.
Not to worry, the Alaska Wolves of the world will be here to defend the cop for shooting a shih tzu, so it all balances out.
Of course it’s the breed. Those dogs that are bred for that sort of thing do that sort of thing. And a chihuahua, or various other breeds, couldn’t have inflicted that harm if it wanted to.
If these were my dogs, I would shoot the two Pit Bulls dead, then the owners.
Enough already with the murder and mayhem, there are plenty of other less lethal dogs to be adopted instead.
It also would not hurt to make the owners fully accountable for what they do. That alone would reduce the number, thought there will still be they young “it could never happen to me” folks that bring ‘em up mean. In a free country, you have to allow people to make stupid decisions. And when those decisions affect other people, they need to be held accountable.
Now, if half the pit bulls out there were doing this sort of thing, I’d take a different perspective. But this kind of thing really is pretty rare.
Something like this happened to me, but I don’t blame the pit - I blamed the owner. If you want a picture of an irresponsible owner this one nailed it.
It was a giant - way up to the end of size range -pit, unneutered (seriously - it had giant testicles that were the first thing you noticed ) wandering around loose. Then they sent their kid out to bring it home, which consisted of a little child chasing the dog around for hours screaming at it as it wandered on people’s porches and yards almost a mile from home. The people insisted they were moving and it was a rare chance it got out.
Several months after that dog killed my animal, I was in a vet and a woman was complaining that a pit had been wandering into her yard all the time and she was worried about her little dogs. Yep, you guessed it -same dog.
This one was not the dog’s fault, IMHO. If I were the law, I would have come down on those folks so hard they would seriously regret it. I made the woman aware of the police report. I’m going to follow up.
