Brandeis University withdraws planned honorary degree for Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Brandeis University in Massachusetts announced Tuesday that it had withdrawn the planned awarding of an honorary degree to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a staunch critic of Islam and its treatment of women, after protests from students and faculty.

The university said in a statement posted online that the decision had been made after a discussion between Ali and university President Frederick Lawrence.

"She is a compelling public figure and advocate for women's rights, and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls throughout the world," said the university's statement. "That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University's core values."

Ali, a member of the Dutch Parliament from 2003 to 2006, has been quoted as making comments critical of Islam. That includes a 2007 interview with Reason Magazine in which she said of the religion, "Once it's defeated, it can mutate into something peaceful. It's very difficult to even talk about peace now. They're not interested in peace. I think that we are at war with Islam. And there's no middle ground in wars."

"...her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University's core values." And those core values are.......being played for a fool by radicals around the world. Once again we see that in what passes for "academia" in America, there is a pecking order of causes which must be worshiped at all costs. The top three are 1.Homosexuality, 2. Islam, 3. Being female in a racial minority group. Meanwhile, the three least important causes in academia: 1. Christians, 2. White Men, 3. Americanism.

I read her book. I can’t help but wonder just how much the complainers really know of her and her story.

Idiots

The fact that Brandeis tried to give this worthless wench any kind of honor speaks loudly about their (total lack of) academic standards.

Remember, at Brandeis, 2 + 2 = 6 (for large values of 2, as 2 approaches 3).

At least their student body rose out of their liberal lethargy long enough to object. Kudos to them.

Gasp, my bad. The woman is an honor, not a piece of Hillary.

My apologies....and I request removal of any kudos to the student body.

Gasp, any worse skimming of an article and I can declare myself as dumb as the Obamadork.

I’ll go to my corner until released.

Universities are leading America into a post Christian, neo pagan decadent era. First step is to eliminate all taxpayer supported tenure. Ironically Brandeis was founded by progressive Jews and now finds itself posturing and bowing before people who would love nothing more than the destruction of Israel and the annihilation of the Jewish people.

Brandeis has no "core" values (= constants).

Like most Libs, at their core they have variables, subject to change based on all sorts of conditions and emotions.

No, the top three core values are mohammedanism, mohammedanism and mohammedanism.

Everyone else is at the bottom of the pile.

You notice that she is a minority female who is an academic free thinker.

The opponents to the muhammadan treatment of women, gays, blacks, orientals and academics who are freethinkers is not only ignored but actually denounced.

Just why do parents spend lots of money to send their kids to places like brandeis? Perhaps, to teach them how not to be. What idiots.

She should consider it “a badge of honor” to have this happen to her. By this happening, it raises her overall story to an even higher visibility in the world. Besides, who in their right mind would want any kind of honorary degree/recognition from a liberal left-wing, communist-indoctrinating institution with little, or no, real core values to start with???

“...Just why do parents spend lots of money to send their kids...”

Because most of them have no clue what’s going on in the schools, nor are they paying attention, and many times, they just don’t care.

Not everyone reads or is informed of “the agenda”, unfortunately. It’s pretty much why we are where we are right now in this Country.

Just wait until these morons discover how all their relentless “tolerance” and kowtowing to the Islamicists will be repaid in the future.

Do they realize that in Iran no one has time to discuss issues like gay marriage because they are too busy publicly hanging homosexuals?

They don't care. Both LGBT[more alphabet-soup here]-rights mania and islamophilia are driven by the fundamental commitment of the Left: hatred of the Gospel (at Brandeis doubtless mixed with a little Jewish-self-loathing). Anti-Christians can slaughter homosexuals on an industrial scale, and the left won't say "boo", but just try to hold by one's Christian (or traditional Jewish) moral standards and decline to provide services for a "gay wedding" and they'll see you in court. Orthodox Christian Russia gets tarred for banning homosexual propaganda, but Muslim countries get a pass on death penalties for sodomy because they're allies in the left's campaign against Christianity.

They are very aware of it. That's why they hate her.

(rewriting a little of the article for clarity)

Brandeis University in Massachusetts announced Tuesday that it had withdrawn the planned awarding of an honorary degree to Frederick Douglass, a staunch critic of slavery and its treatment of blacks, after protests from students and faculty.

“He is a compelling public figure and opponent to slavery, and we respect and appreciate his work to protect and defend the rights of slaves throughout the world,” said the university’s statement. “That said, we cannot overlook certain of his past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.”

More than 85 pro-slavery of about 350 faculty members at Brandeis signed a letter asking for Douglass to be removed from the list of honorary degree recipients. And an online petition created Monday by students at the school of 5,800 had gathered thousands of signatures from inside and outside the university as of Tuesday afternoon.

“This is a real slap in the face to southern students,” said senior Calvin Candie, a member of the Anti-Negro League, who created the petition said before the university withdrew the honor.

“But it’s not just the southern community that is upset but all pro-slavery students and faculty,” she said. “A university that prides itself on the quality of its chattels and the right to property should not hold up someone who is an outright abolitionist.”

But George Fitzhugh, a spokesman for the Council on Promulgation of Involuntary Servitude, the nation’s largest slavery advocacy group, said, “It is unconscionable that such a prestigious university would honor someone with such openly hateful views.”
