Got rid of a 1970's "Home Entertainment Center", and wifey wants a semi-huge screen TV
We don’t have any preference being a Hollywood production company but LED seems to be preferred by our kids in the special effects and CGI department. Green screen effects works wonders with LED. Plasma is also great.
Wow, I was going to suggest Samsung before reading all the posts!
Sony has also been a good choice for us.
Have had bad luck with a toshiba flat screen.
We have a 55" panasonic plasma and I love it, passe or not. It is 16 months old. Crisp picture that I prefer to TV #2:
A 50" LG LED. The LED is brighter, and the contrasts are sharper to the point of being harsh, imo (also @ 16 months). I'm sure I could adjust it but I'm too lazy.
Go on the net and do some reading if you have not done it already. Don't waste time w/ less than 1080, and the higher the refresh rate the better. (heck, even this advice may be outdated)
The other things to look for depend on your price point. Stuff like number of HDMI inputs can be important if you plan to use it for gaming, and blue ray and a computer, etc. Sound will be only adequate at best. I bought a small sound system w/ a sub woofer to punch things up for movies.
Since I was upgrading from a big grainy CRT almost anything was going to be knockout good. This stuff is always moving and improving so I would bet you can get a truly kick a$$ 50" for $4 to 5. And if some aspects are a bit outdated; so what? You can pay twice as much for one that isn't outdated and in a few months it will be.

Got a Samsung 55” some years back. It’s hooked up to the ‘net, and keeps adding more and more features. One problem was the sound, so it’s hooked up to the stereo receiver. It’s hooked up to an Apple TV, gets Netflix and Hulu, movie trailers, content from other online providers like YouTube. Just make sure you get one that doesn’t have its own camera.

One thing that I figured out was that you don’t want anything with a glass screen. Stick with plastic. There is a *lot* less reflection to deal with. (Lamps, windows, daylight... none of it’s bothersome)

We have a Samsung UN55D7000. That’s about all I know but I could get hubby (Mr. Tech) to give you more info if interested, LOL. It’s a really nice TV, for the little I watch of it.
I’ve hade three visions. And they worked great. Also have had experience with a samsung and was impressed but can’t tell you about life time.
We did a lot of research and settled on a Sharp Aquos Quattron 70” for our home theater-very satisfied. Got it at Best Buy right before the Olympics started. The Samsung had a slightly better picture, but not better enough to warrant the much higher price, in our opinion.
There are a few levels of Sharp Aquos. Make sure you’re looking at the Quattron for the best picture. We found the reviews at Amazon to be very helpful.
We also like our Panasonic Viera plasma a lot (50”), but Panasonic is discontinuing plasmas, so a larger one of them wasn’t an option for us.
If you have the right type of space, a projection TV is awesome. We didn’t.
Everybody seems to love LCD, I’ll stick with my Panasonic plasma. I think plasma delivers the best pic especially for fast action, sports etc. Plasma has the fastest refresh over lcd or led and the picture is clear from any viewing angle.
Choose for yourself but I chose plasma with full satisfaction. And they don’t burn in or have the problems they had when they first came out.

You can't tell the difference in resolution from 720p for all practical purposes, and 120Mhz is just interpolated 60Mhz.
You can't go wrong with any of the major brands... Samsung, LG, Visio, etc.
Shop for price, and spend the savings on a laptop to connect to the TV. If you have broadband, you don't need cable. There is so much free stuff to watch. ;>]
Agree, I have three 5 yr old Vizios from Costco. All have been trouble free.
No Vizios I install flat screens and surrond sounds all the time had to take back 3 of them your results may vary

BTW - What I was surprised by when I was looking was that the picture can vary quite a bit even between different size tvs from the same company. Visit places that have substantial displays and find what you like.
Not sure what the refresh rate is on my plasma or LED, but the pictures are sharp and true even with live action. I can see easily see that gap between the receivers fingers and Sanchez's pass. Then again that could also be because the gap is a couple of yards...

Go LED. Both use LCD for the picture formation. The electronics is identical. The backlight can be LED for very long life or vacuum fluorescent for a life expectancy about double that of a standard fluorescent light bulb.
Get the LED.
