Why you should NEVER park in front of a hydrant: Boston firefighters smash BMW windows....
The Daily Mail Online ^ | April 10, 2014 | Joshua Gardner

A Boston BMW owner made the mistake of parking illegally in front of a fire hydrant, so fire fighters battling an 8-alarm blaze simply smashed a hose through the windows Wednesday night.

It appears to be an act of retaliation at first, but firefighters say the fire hose must be as straight as possible to maintain water pressure.

And with this multi-home inferno, they needed everything in perfect working order.

Of course he thinks he’s better than anybody else.
He’s a racist republican too.

People are easily led to class envy.
A little surprised to see it here.
(ftr, I’m with the FD)

Once they had broken the drivers window couldn’t they have released the parking brake, put it in neutral, and pushed it back getting it all the way out of the way?

Wouldn’t that have worked better than running a kinked hose through broken glass???

I've got a vague recollection of the same thing happening in the movie "Backdraft."

A former city municipal worker used to tell us about the local PD officers thought it would be OK to get a free car wash when the workers were clearing the lines or making sure the fire hydrants were in good working order.

One LEO moved in front of the hydrant at a low rate of speed. When he got back to the HQ, the entire right side of the squad car was smashed in to the reinforcements.

I don’t think the transmission can be shifted into Neutral without the key in the ignition.

You’re right — I just checked my non-BMW and the key does have to be in the ignition — another drawback of newer vehicles.

Not just newer vehicles, though it depend on how you define ‘newer’.

Every vehicle with a automatic transmission I’ve owned since 1970 needed the key to get it out of Park.

Would not be surprised if the owner gets sued by the fire victims as the car impeaded the FD from putting the fire out timly.

You just called me out. I own a BMW as I would not buy a Gov motors car.

This guy paid $300K for a parking space in Back Bay....

when I lived on lower Comm Ave in the late 70's I paid 35.00 a month for my space in back of my building.

I suspect that there are plenty of BMW owners who could use some object lessons in common courtesy.

What's the difference between a porcupine and a BMW?

I think they did it because they could. If they used one of the side outlets on the hydrant and it probably would have been quicker than smashing the windows and feeding the hose through, but less entertaining.

Another BMW moron heard from.

Not only is there a diplay of ignorance abour hydraulics... I doubt is he/she knows what the word means.
To say nothing about the difference between gravity and very high high pressure flow behavior.

"I don’t think the firefighters had much time to think the matter over"

20 of 'em could have picked up one end and swung it out of the way. Or they could have used the Jaws of Life to provide better clearance on the curb side door.

This was buying a piece of real estate not much bigger than a postage stamp.....not to rent....not quite the same. Some of the places in Back Bay do not have a car space to rent w/ the residence.

resident parking permit. I still have my sticker.

That joke is often repeated with *Porsche* substituted for *BMW* driver.
