Santa Clara police fatally shot a woman who they say started attacking them with a baseball bat.
Lt. Kurt Clarke said in a statement the officers, whom he did not identify, feared "for their safety," and fired at her about 4:50 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Lick Mill Boulevard after they were called there because she called 911 "making threats to harm herself and others."
When they arrived, police said the woman came out of the front door and attacked the officers with the bat.
She was treated at the scene but died later at a hospital.
Download the free NBC Bay Area mobile app Clarke did not release any more details.
Fatal officer-involved shootings are unusual in Santa Clara. The last instance was in 2012 when a 42-year-old man was killed during a DUI investigation after he became "uncooperative" and reached for his gun, police said,
“Stop resisting! Stop resisting!”
Couldn’t the police just shoot the bat out of her hand? /s
Did they shoot her little dog, too?
No tazer available I guess.
Weren’t they carrying batons?
So where were the ubiquitous Tasers?
Personally, I think the penalty for attempted suicide should be death by lethal injection...
I haven’t seen a cop carrying a baton for decades.
I’d have just set my beeber on stune. But they probably don’t carry beebers.
Oh, so now aggressively attacking a cop is not sufficient cause for using deadly force? Seriously?!!!
Tasers.
If only these cops had tasers, this woman would be alive.
Years ago, I would get blasted here for defending the use of tasers by LEO’s. Now it seems cops have quit using tasers and are electing to just murder people. Instead of simply disarming a nutty broad with a bat; they just shoot her dead.
Why didn’t a squad of cops bring their baseball bats to the ruckus? I’d have love to have seen the expression on that woman’s face if she could have seen them with their bats marching toward her.
So many killings, so many questions....
If it was “officers” (plural), why could not one one them tased her while the other backed up the first with deadly force? Or were they also expecting her dog?
Sounds like suicide by cop.
The only good thing that can be said here is that at least they shot the woman with the bat. Considering the CA cops' abilities to ID suspects, as shown in the Dorner manhunt, I'm surprised they didn't shoot a 300 lb blind black man because his cane sorta looked like a bat.
She might have harmed herself so he killed her for her safety.
They should be like Bammy and issue the call to retreat. If the woman is only after the cops, how is the "public" in danger?
Armed with only a bat, she could have been rushed by officers with shields and perhaps one officer might have been bruised. It’s obvious the guiding criterion for police, as to use of deadly force, is their perception that they might be harmed in any way. The silver lining to this incident is that all officers went home safely.
You know you live in a fascist police state when you're not allowed to just randomly smash people's faces in with aluminum baseball bats anymore.
What's next? Arresting people for mugging or carjacking? It's a slippery slope.
