Notice they call him "her" in this article. Come on, homosexuals and transsexuals in the military is a GREAT idea isn't it? Notice they call him "her" in this article. The AP reporter does, but not sure the military does so. In the absence of "corrective" (or, perhaps "therapeutic") surgery and an updating of official records, doing so by the military would seem to raise a lot of issues.

It is indeed absurd. It’s fine to point out, a few ‘grafs in, that Manning asserts transsexual status and prefers to be called Chelsea, BUT THAT he has not yet legally changed his name or gender. (Both of those changes are legally do-able, but my point is, he hasn’t done them YET.)

If he wants to be a Chelsea then so be it. Send him to military prison and let the marines take care of it. They will make a Chelsea out of him. No Problem at all.
Just let the marines pass it around to some of those guys who have been there for a very long time. It works both ways well. Chelsea will get instant verification that they consider her a "B itch".
