Need help with math problem

Posted on 04/15/2014 3:31:11 PM PDT by ru4liberty

Don't laugh at us old folk. Our data bases are full, so we can't retain what we don't use like we once could.

My friend and I need some help from some of you mathematically inclined FReepers.

Problem:

Mike's sales goal last year was $90,071. His employer increased it to $124,111 this year. What percentage of increase is this, and how did you arrive at the answer?

Thanking y'all in advance. :)

It depends on which math you use:

—Obama math, used frequently by BLS and HHS for their fun-with-numbers as they pull numbers out of their rears

—New math, used to get you to think, regardless of what you come up with as the answer

—Real math, used to get the real answer — the stuff that was taught up until the late 1960s.

“The lower number” is condition A, so what’s your point?

((y2 - y1) / y1)*100 = your percentage change.

Can I plead Tax Fatigue?

Sure! By the way, don't mail it before you check the math. LOL! :-)

((Old goal - New goal)/Old goal) * 100 = Percent increase.

An approx 40% increase is pretty stiff.

Are they trying to fire him for cause or are they suspecting him of sandbagging them last year?

By how much did he make/miss his goal last year.

My calculator is presently unavailable, therefore this problem CANNOT BE SOLVED.

It is a TRICK QUESTION.

(at least as seen from the public schools that THOUSANDS of FReepers [if you can believe it] send their kids to)

You really don’t have to go to all that trouble to subtract 90,071 from 124,111. That’s extra work that just burns calories and wastes time.

Here’s the right way to do the problem

124,111/90,071 = 1.377924

Bingo. A 37.7924% increase.

(($124,111-$90,071) divided by $90,071) times 100% = 37.79%

(($124,111-$90,071)/$90,071)*100%

I’m no Pythagorean but, if Bob doesn’t sell at least a million bucks he’s not gonna make enough money to keep his kitty happy.

124,111 - 90,071 = 34,040

34,040 / 90,071 = .3779 * 100 = 37.79%

124111 divided by 90071 equals

1.377924

37.7924% increase

faster process...
