Really, haters gonna hate. Jews had no homeland till Israel. So they were not “native” to any one country. As soon as something goes wrong folks are gonna point fingers. And they are not gonna point fingers at themselves. Gotta have a scapegoat.
I don't have a lot of experience dealing with Jews. In my small Southern town the only Jews emigrated from, mostly, New York years ago. Goldberg's and extended family mostly. There is no synagogue here, closest is in Birmingham.
But, I can see where, if you didn't get to know them, that they would be easy to dislike. Maybe cause they are Yankees, maybe cause they are Jews. Heck, maybe both. But once you get to know them, and more importantly, once they get to know you, they are great folks and a lot of fun to be around and funny (to me) and fun to party with.
One of the old ladies (dead now) was one of my special friends. She and her husband both. When I first got to know them I thought Good God! They bitched at each other, ordered each other around (her mostly), ordered me around, nothing was good enough....etc. etc. But after the initial shock you realized that she was just playing you and enjoyed nothing more than you giving it right back to her.
Anyway, with my limited experience, I've found that Jewish folks take a little time to warm up to. And they to you. And a lot of people just don't take the time....
Well, my little rant is sure not gonna cure antisemitism. Just a couple of observations.
I've a very good black friend...that reminds me all the time what a racist I am!! HAHAHA!!
He's a hell of a friend...and would do anything for me. And I for him........
Just so you know, there are lots of Jews from the South, like me, who are most certainly not Yankees, and who despise the term. Like me. And lest you think that the Jews are some sort of prewar carpetbaggers, look up names like Haym Solomon and Judah Benjamin, as well as just about every major player in the triangular trade that made the South so successful for so long, and share these stories with your friends and family the next time you hear the words “Jew Yankee.”
