Yahoo’s recently fired chief operating officer has received a final severance package of $58million after only working at the internet company for 15 months. A new regulatory filing released Wednesday revealed the eight-figure payout that Henrique de Castro was given by his former boss, Marissa Mayer, after she both hired and fired him in just over a year. Mayer dumped de Castro, who was in charge of ad sales, in January after concluding he wasn't executing on her plan for reviving Yahoo's lackluster ad growth.

I just read Marissa Mayer’s wiki. Nothing on her resume would make me want to hire her as a CEO of anything.

She was one of Google’s first 20 hires. My guess is that anyone of them that stayed around for a while did pretty good — especially those willing to play the game.

Fat payouts are normal in nwo’s “silicon valley”, as well as most other industries.

There is competition to hire top execs.

Of course, it's a publicly-held company, not a privately-held company.

While payscales be very generous for employees of privately-held companies, such large payouts for such short tenures are much more common for high-level employees of publicly-held companies than privately-held ones. In privately held companies, length of service is typically a key factor in getting very high compensation.
