Johnny Depps Transcendence bombed last night as expected, taking in just $4.8 million. That means the $150 million movie will likely take in around $12 million for the weekend.
This is Depps second major flop at the box office, following the catastrophic Lone Ranger. And now this poses an important question: can Depp open a movie that isnt Pirates of the Caribbean? The answer is No. Hes made zillions from the Disney adventure movies.

It's simply a boring exploration of a standard left-wing trope, and if that wasn't enough to turn you off, it features noted commies like Jane Fonda, Kris Kristofferson and Hume Cronyn. It's NOT a classic.
It’s crap. The only reason the book sold more than about 10 copies was that The “Church” of Scientology made a concerted effort to force its members to buy 500,000 pity copies. It’s nothing but the pulp dreck that L. Ron Hubbard wrote at the start of his career; it would have been readable as standard 1930’s space shoot ‘em up, but when it was published in 1982 it was an embarrassment. It died the death it deserved.
Ten bucks. Easily worth it.
Less Bad News: He's rich, and this is his girlfriend.
Agree with you, 100%! I hate to admit this to too many people, but ED WOOD is my second favorite movie. Brilliant with a huge heart, about friendship.
Once Depp came under the influence of that Tim Burton freak it was all over.
Do people really NOT go to a movie because of the actor? I’m not convinced. I go to see the movie, often surprised at who the actors are. (My biggest surprise last year was Jack Reacher...played by pussy Tom Cruise instead of a real man). Guess I should pay more attention.
Pull the string!!
I liked that one and I'm not even much of fan western genre.
“Once Depp came under the influence of that Tim Burton freak it was all over.”
Yep, never been a fan of his style, it’s always dark, morbid and gothic.
FWIW, I saw the movie and liked it a lot. It sounds like the usual machine-takes-over-man theme, and that is the storyline. But it’s nicely updated to be a plausible outcome of the trends we face. It doesn’t have unnecessary car chases, violence, sex etc. It tells a classical SF story, with very good cinema qualities, and does it well.
I think “Donnie Brasco” was a good movie.
LOL! Beware. Take care.
LOL...that was my thought on seeing the trailer.
Lone Ranger really wasn’t a bomb, they just spent too much making it. It’s one of the highest grossing westerns ever, if the budget had been reasonable it would have been profitable. Transcendence just didn’t look interesting, and subject matter is the primary driver for if people see a movie. The ads love to focus on the stars, director and even producers, but every study Hollywood pays for says subject is the #1 driver.
