A statue, believed to be the ancient Greek goddess Demeter, has been unearthed at an illegal excavation in Simav, western Turkey. The statue, weighing in at 610kg and standing 2.8 meters tall, was discovered by two Turks, Ramazan C. And Ismail G, 26 and 62 years old respectively, who are alleged to have been conducting illegal excavations in the wider area where the statue was found. The two men were taken into custody by the Turkish police and sent to court.

The head of the statue and the altar, missing during the raid, were later found in a house in the city centre.

In Greek mythology, Demeter, one of Zeus’ sisters, so the story goes, was the goddess of agriculture, nature, abundance and seasons, and mother of Persephone, wife of Hades.

This is a file photo I think, there’s reference in the article to having to go back and retrieve the head. But the statue in this photo is in remarkably good shape.

She gave her right arm for some of the good stuff!

That's how they knew she's wasn't Venus...

Milo Venus was a beautiful lass
She had the world in the palm of her hand
But she lost both her arms in a wrestling match
To meet a brown eyed handsome man
She fought and won herself a brown eyed handsome man.

Eschewing images was first practiced by the Hebrews. The image of a deity was considered to be the site of and object of worship in pagan rituals.

When I lived in Turkey....the country relied on university groups from Germany, US, England to do the excavating.

Any ancient site was overrun with young kids from nearby villages willing to *sell* foreign tourists artifacts they or their parents kicked up themselves.

My favorite sculpture of Medusa, Temple of Apollo, at Didyma.

In the ancient world there were stiff penalties for impersophonating a deity.

According to Herodotus, the Persians did not have statues of their gods (1.131).

Whether he was accurate on that point, and whether the Persian practice was as old as the Hebrew practice, I don't know.

The Zoroastrians used a fire; one Zoroastrian community in India claims to have never let theirs go out, even when they were on the move, for over 2000 years.
