dictionaries ad nauseam | 24 April 2014 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

pusillanimous [pyoo-suh-lan’-uh-muhs] adjective
1. lacking courage or resolution; cowardly; faint-hearted; timid.
2. proceeding from or indicating a cowardly spirit.

Example sentence:
It takes a lot to make Jimmy Carter look like Winston Churchill. But President Obama, who bats not an eye as a Russian warplane buzzes a U.S. warship in the Black Sea, has accomplished that with his pusillanimous policy regarding Moscow's creeping anschluss in Ukraine.
-- What Would Reagan Do: Revive Europe Missile Defense, Investors Business Daily editorial, April 17, 2014

Etymology:
Late 14th century, (implied in pusillanimity), from L.L. pusillanimis "having little courage" (used in Church L. totranslate Gk. oligopsychos "small-souled"), from L. pusillis "very weak, little" (dim. of pullus "young animal")+ animus "spirit, courage."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

For plausible deniability,
the GOP calls itself ‘pusillanimous’,
but the G.O.P. (GIVE.OBAMA.POWER) are traitors
to the US Constitution, and the concepts of
Law and “Equal Justice Under the Law”.

this mom was not remotely pusillanimous. not too smart to have her toddler around a guest pitbull, but she did save her.

The words “what the f@’& is he doing?” were coming out of my mouth prior to that goal.

I know he has done that behind the goal $h!t, to our advantage, at Caps games. Poor thing i imagine the Yinzers are ready to crucify him. Heretofore, i think they were wanting to string up Letang.

my family accuses me constantly of being a secret Penguins fan. i know i should in all good conscience, as a Caps fan, root for the BJ, but my love for Dan Byslma and concern for his job has me secretly rooting for the Pens. Now, if someone could assure me that if he lost his job with the Pens, he would be hired by the Caps, i would root for BJ. But as it stands, i am rooting for the Pens. do not tell my family or Paula, as i may be disowned.
