It's a topic so divisive that it has been known to be a significant factor in choosing a spouse: Do you let your pet sleep in your bed with you?
In some households, it's the norm. All pets are allowed everywhere, all the time. In others, it's no pets on any furniture, ever. But in many, the answer lies somewhere in between: Perhaps the cat or small dog is given a spot to snuggle, but the Great Dane has to remain on the floor.
Many factors come into play, of course. Some pet owners suffer from allergies and sleeping with a face full of fur only exacerbates them, or maybe they can't deal with the dirt a dog would track onto the duvet. But plenty of pet owners - and veterinary professionals - can't imagine drifting off to sleep without their kitty or Cocker Spaniel cuddled up nearby.

Our three cats know that routine very well. They frequently get up close while we sleep and know how to get close without waking us. But, any unacceptable behavior will cause them to get an immediate and unceremonious boost to the floor. It’s a king bed and there is plenty of room as long as they respect our territory as the alpha cats.
Our Old English Sheep dog is our burglar alarm. She sleeps very lightly, and is off the bed in seconds if there is a noise outside. Her bark will scare anyone away and wake me in the process.
My dog can’t read.
You’re lucky, my cat does that at 3AM. I’m out of bed before 4 and the cat takes the whole bed for herself.
The girl has her own bed - far away from me - the boy gets as close as he can and likes to "make bread".
I keep an old sheet on top of my comforter - cheaper and easier to wash.

She is actually about average for a Mastiff. There are some out there that approach the 225-250 lb mark.
We tried letting her sleep in bed when she was smaller but she is such an attention whore that it just didn’t work. We would wake up in the middle of the night with her staring at us and then she would start pawing at us to pet her. Not a pleasant way to be woken up.
Indeed. Cats decide this stuff for themselves.
You must have a California King and no other bed mate.
My 100 lb Akita can stretch out until he covers 2/3 of a Queen sized bed. With two humans already in it, plus a 12 lb cat, there is no room. He also doesn’t get the concept of sleeping in any aligned position and instead, takes his 2/3 on the diagonal. Not to mention the stiff legs.
He feels discriminated against, but we haven’t told him about ACLU or PETA, so he just goes and sleeps on *his* sofa (the one with a washable slip cover). Also have not told him that some dogs do sleep in a bed with their humans.

Yes, the transformation is particularly amazing the next morning when the liquor has worn off.
No cat on the bed when Mr. Married21 and I are in it. He snuck in one night, but was ousted.
Napping in the big easy chair with the cat on my lap, OTOH, is absolutely the best.
BTW, a little off topic but... we are inheriting another cat this weekend. Not sure how to integrate the new one into the life of the household, as I’ve never had two before. Any advice from wise FReepers would be welcome. Our cat is about 10, male, declawed (was that way when we rescued it), and the new one is 5, female, with claws.
