Jersey City received a lesson on the impermanence of life a bit earlier than planned today, when a toddler mistook a Buddhist sand mandala for a playground this morning, smudging the center and sides and almost destroying days of painstaking work.

Many lessons were learned.
First, watch your children.
Second, something that fragile should be guarded constantly.
The purpose of the Mandala is to be destroyed soon after creation. The creator learns to let go of material objects and to ultimately seek something higher.
I’ve always found keeping them on display like this goes against the entire principle.

Yes, that’s my understanding of the Mandala as well. I suspect the monks saw the unexpected event as part of the natural workings of the universe and took it in stride.
Impermanence is the lesson of the sand mandala so I’m sure they saw it as just that.
I thought the whole point of these things is that they are fleeting.
And that’s why we can’t have nice things!
