Lucasfilm Jettisons The Star Wars Expanded Universe (Games Included)
The Game Informer ^ | April 25, 2014 | Joe Juba

Posted on 04/25/2014 5:45:25 PM PDT by Timber Rattler

Which stories are included in the official Star Wars canon has been a source of debate for years, but in light of the new upcoming films, Lucasfilm has made a statement regarding what it considers to be the true timeline. In short, all of the Expanded Universe – including video games, comics, and novels – didn't really happen.

This is actually a crying shame since much of the SW Expanded Universe material is far superior to the drivel that Lucas himself has produced, with the exception of Clone Wars, which was well-written and I enjoyed.

The Best Star Wars Material is often in the Expanded Universe

When I was a Teenager I loved the Clone Wars Multi-Media Project. Why? Because the contributors actually gave a Sh!t about Canon and not stepping on each others toes.

All that when out the window with that POS Clone Wars Movie and 3D Series. Toss Canon Right out the window.

Well that's it. Star Wars is dead.

By the way. Do you think it's a coincidence that the best Star Wars Film (The Empire Strikes Back) is the on that has the least amount of involvement from George Lucas?

Yup, Lucas can't write or direct, and so that's why ESB was by far the best movie in the series with Irvin Kershner at the helm.

BTW, the Clone Wars animated series got a lot better after its first season---the story of how Anakin descended into the Dark Side was much deeper and better explained than in Lucas' pitiful Episodes I-III. It was pretty awesome watching the future Vader skulk around in secret using and using the dark Side to get what he needed or wanted at any given time.

Of course it did. Doesn’t George Lucas believe in parallel universes?

I guess the Yuuzhan Vong gives him nightmares.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious datacube of forgotten Jedi lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “ ’Tis some Nerf herder,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber blast door — Only this, and nothing more.” Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately Revan of the Sithly days of yore; Not the least obeisance made he; not an instant stopped or stayed he; But, with mien of Dark Lord or Lady, perched above my chamber door — Perched upon a bust of Palpatine just above my chamber door — Perched, and sat, and nothing more. Quoth the Revan, “Nevermore.” “Be that word our sign of parting, fiend of shadow!” I shrieked, upstarting — “Get thee back into the Tempest Zero and the Night’s Plutonium Core! Leave no black cloak as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken! — quit the bust above my door! Take thy lightsaber from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” Quoth the Revan, “Nevermore.”

I expect some of the better ideas of the Expanded Universe will be recycled one way or the other. The city-planet Corouscant which figures so prominently in the prequel trilogy first appeared in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel Heir to the Empire.

As far as I am concerned, Lucas already botched the timelines with Episodes I, II and III, and screwed up the background lore when he re-edited Episode IV to substitute CGI for the original Special Effects.

Lucas can’t write or direct?

Um, the ten zillion fans who saw the original “Star Wars” film in the theater eighty-five times during its first release disagree with you.

(YES, I know it’s called Episode IV: A New Hope, but when I was a kid and saw it in the theater, the poster said, “Star Wars.” Trying to change movie names retroactively is never a good idea, fanboys.)

The original “Star Wars” film was a mash up of other SciFi plots, characters, ands themes — all hijacked by Lucas.

After he had depleted the reservoir of that larceny — there was “no there, there”

Just my opinion.

He had a lot of help with that script. Most notably Gary Kurtz, Katz and his wife, and a group of close friends, Millius, Spielberg. They pointed out some flaws, and even though it irked George, he made the fixes.

He didn’t have all of the “yes men” he had with the prequels.

Very cool link!

(I suspect that a lot more effort went into creating those scholarly pages than Lucas put into hacking out the script for Star Wars.)

"George Lucas ruined my life."

"You can type this stuff George, but you can't say it."

Carrie Fisher

Once Lucas became rich and powerful enough to run unrestrained in Hollywood, he proved to be a disaster. His latter movies are horrible, and have become a caricature of themselves.

After the awful episodes 1,2,3. Lucas needs to take a hands off policy except to hand over his original screenplays for 7,8,9 to JJ Abrams.

Yes, Lucas cannot write and his direction is very pedestrian. Large chunks of Star Wars were lifted directly from other movies. The escape from the Death star from Douglas Fairbanks. The attack on the Death Star at the end is taken from "633 squadron". (Seriously. Watch it. The situation and scenes are almost identical. Even the dialogue is pretty much the same).

Lucas's genius was cobbling together all those elements into a new and genuinely exciting format. That's what made Star Wars work. It might not be original but its fundamentally a very good action-packed coming-of-age story and it hit the cinemas at a time when there was a dearth of such stuff. In other words, George Lucas got lucky.

“Lucas can’t write or direct...”

“He had a lot of help with that script. “

You guys want it both ways. He can’t write... but he sure had a lot of help with the script! Spielberg!, etc.

So which is it? Is it a crappy script he wrote... or a piece of cinematic genius he had help with from cinematic geniuses?

I guess when you swing a mop handle, it’s a light saber, too. Any weapon at hand works when your goal is to diminish someone’s unprecedented, unequalled-since artistic achievement.

By the way, I wouldn’t cite Spielberg when making your case that Lucas had script help. Spielberg is not a writer. He rarely takes a writing credit. He cribbed an unearned credit on “Close Encounters,” according to the executive producer.

Really? I'm going to have to look this up. I always thought the final battle scene of Star Wars was a mashup of Battle of Britain (which also has surprisingly similar dialogue) and The Dam Busters.

Isn’t it amazing/pathetic that those short CGI clips for SW:TOR have more power in their images and performances to tell a compelling story than the six-hour entirety of the prequel trilogy?

Storyline and plot are eternal. Special effects are a function of technology. 633’s only seem bad because we’ve been spoiled by the recent rapid advances in CGI. And at least 633 squadron had real aircraft to work with.
