Town fears that huge swelling beached blue whale carcass ‘might explode’

About one week ago, the carcass of a dead blue whale washed ashore in Trout River, Newfoundland, Canada. As reported by the BBC, residents now fear that the 25-meter-long (over 82-foot-long) decomposing whale, which is filling and expanding with methane gas, could explode. The BBC notes that a sperm whale carcass that landed on the shores of the Faroe Islands exploded as a biologist tried to perform a dissection.

Blue whales are the largest known animals in the world, and the carcass of the beached Trout River blue whale is growing. "The whale is blowing up. It looks as if it's a big balloon, from a distance," Emily Butler, Trout River town manager told CBC News. "There is a possibility as well, with all these gases inside the whale, that it may possibly explode…That's a major concern for us." The BBC reports that an explosion could happen at any time and would not only magnify the stench, but with the whale just feet away from the main waterfront boardwalk, tourists who have gathered near the swelling animal, could be close.

According to Canada’s NTV news, the Trout River town council has been unsuccessful in soliciting help to dispose of the animal carcass. They’ve contacted provincial and federal government agencies but are being told that they will have to deal with the problem themselves. With a small town population of 600 residents, Trout River is not equipped to handle this unique dilemma.

I would think shooting it a few times would allow the methane to leak out.

Back in the olden days before the WHITE MAN, a dead bloated floater whale was considered a blessing by the Indians. Yummy too!

Didn’t huge smelly chunks rain down, crushing roofs of cars, and the odor was so intense that people were seen later in that footage running away, covering their mouths and noses?

They’ve contacted provincial and federal government agencies but are being told that they will have to deal with the problem themselves.

So all the town has to do is reach out to U.S or Canadian private companies who could resolve this in a matter of hours. Tie that baby onto a 53" flatbed trailer and put it in a refrigerated storage facility until the methane danger passes, then process it into pet or zoo food.

This whale is 82’ in length.

I recall seeing a video a few years ago, where a large whale had died and had been loaded on a flatbed. I think it was in Japan. The video showed the truck moving through city streets that had been blocked off to make room for the truck and whale. .....As they were moving slowly through a crowded business district, the whale exploded. Chunks were thrown everywhere and coated the people who were on the sidewalks watching. .....Anyone else recall that video?

George: So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you, boys, I was terrified! But I pressed on - and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment - I was a Marine Biologist! ...The sea was angry that day, my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli! I got about fifty feet out and suddenly, the great beast appeared before me. I tell ya, he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence, he let out a great bellow. I said, "Easy big fella!" And then, as I watched him struggling, I realized that something was obstructing its breathing. From where I was standing I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!

Jerry: Mammal.

George: Whatever

They should hook it up to a few tug boats and tow it back out to sea. Then they can have the Navy come by and use the carcass for target practice. That town will be cleaning whale guts and blubber for a year if that thing explodes on the beach.

They should have drilled holes in it and stuck in a few pieces of PVC pipe for vent holes.

She's looking plump. Gonna be a nice spray of guts and juice when she blows.

Good idea Shooting a few holes holes would “vent it” slowly ... But would Laz hit it?
