Since the healthcare law will cause many people to drop their coverage due to its high cost, alternative means of financing their remaining years may become more prevalent. A viatical settlement is not an inherently bad deal, but companies that have offered them have tended to be on the shady side. Here is a decade-old link on FreeRepublic that goes into some detail about the practice:

Link

Like reverse mortgages, variable annuities and virtually all financial transactions, the devil is in the details. If someone is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and told he has less than six months to live, selling the proceeds of his life insurance policy in order to obtain money for palliative care is a decent idea. Of course, it depends upon the price. If the company offers him $25,000 for his $100,000 policy, it’s a bad deal. A fair price might be $90,000, which would make the company a healthy 10000/90000 rate of return, equal to 11.11% profit. If the poor fellow only lasts the predicted six months, the annualized profit would be twice that.

Teachers who have deviated from the viatical path of Catholicism should teach elsewhere, and not at a Catholic school. If you don't like the rules of a particular club, go start your own.

I miss the days when I would have guessed that stood for some sort of bacon sandwich.

Reverse mortgages, the viatical device that lets banks keep all the value and hangs old people out to dry is a lot like obamacare. All promises, no guarantees, and in the end you’re left with nothing.

Here is my real homework. It's the viatical tale of a Jersey boy, and the truth doesn't line up with the fantasy, the song, or the movie.

the reverberations continue from the papal phone call. NY times reporter Douthat is fair, and his various scenarios are all legit. Does the Pope intend to permit the administration of the viaticum to those in permanently adulterous relationships?
