We should buy The LA Clippers! Lets pool our resources to buy out Donald Sterling before Oprah does!

To heck with Oprah, Larry Ellison, Magics Johnsons, David Geffen and the others. We freepers can do a better job. TV just said the Bunny Ranch owner is putting in a bid. If he can then so can Free Republic. Lets get in on the action before AlGore and Rush Limbaugh put in their bids!

And best of all we would not run the team like a plantation!

Oprah is not going to buy the Clippers. By the way, how would engaging in a business transaction, and giving a billion dollars to Sterling, “show him?”

Just boycott all pro teams. No watching the games, buying tickets or merchandise.

It won’t be long before the economy kills their profit margins anyways. The middle class can’t afford pro team stuff much longer.

BassetBall has not been berry, berry good to me.

I'd rather buy a NHL team.

So, the “bad” (white) racist is going to be forceably bought out by the “good” (black) racist.

Ah, Amerika, Amerika

If we can all scrape up $100, we can probably buy controlling interest in a WNBA team in a minor market.

It would be nice to have a conservative team. Of course, would we tolerate liberals or prima donnas on the team?

Prima donnas like LaBron.

Forbes valued the team at 575 million a few months ago. If there's enough racial mau-mauing of Donald Sterling the buyers might get it at a bargain price. Due to Clippers being a tarnished property that only Black owners or co-owners can fix up....this will be the narrative

We could have an all white team..... Or how about an all Mexican team? Would that be racist? LA is becoming Little Mexico so I see the fan potential! We could get rich!!

Two teams have sold for high valuations since that, so $575 million is way to low now.

A forced sale always means a sale below market value -- by definition.

Last time I checked they strongly suggested he sell it. He may want to anyway. That doesn’t mean he won’t get top dollar. Two moderate franchises just went for really high prices.

Please note: I didn’t say he wouldn’t get a lot for it. I said that the sale would be below market value, by definition. By that, I meant that Sterling was not a willing seller. He never gave any indication of being interested in a sale before this scandal broke, and was consequently ordered to divest himself of the franchise. That may change, and he might become a willing seller — in which case the sale is no longer forced (again, by definition).

This isn’t about free speech, so much as it is about property rights.

You need to read more closely. Sterling hasn’t been forced to sell anything. The commissioner said he was going to suggest Sterling sell the team. Silver did not say he was going to be forced to sell the team. So your contention is inaccurate.

At what point does “strongly suggested” become “ordered”. Perhaps I made too many assumptions there. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There are a lot of very rich franchise owners — they won’t like actions that could turn around and bite them.

The middle class aren’t attending games very much these days.

Most of the pro attendance is business expense accounts and politicians with “comp” tickets.

We'll see. Doesn'tr Sterling have the right to appeal this whole decision? Maybe his lifetime will be banned?

I tried to pool FReepers together to buy Smith & Wesson years ago. Only $38 million then. Only 380 of us in for $100,000 each.

A big no go.

That same 380 would have to pony up $2 million each for this hot load.

Nothing motivates a politician to vote for a new arena / ballpark subsidy like the computer-generated view of the field from his “comp” tickets.

I suspect Sterling had been targeted by blacks to extort his ball club, and his policy was then to not entertain any blacks to avoid the risk.

Their 24 hr frenzy to deny him his right to free speech and then to try and steal his possessions appears rigged, IMHO.
