8 Cat Breeds that Love Dogs

Hoping to add a cat to your dog friendly home? While sociability in cats depends on the individual animal's personality, there are some breeds that are generally friendly and can get along well with other animals in the home. We've asked Emmy-Award winning veterinarian Dr. Jeff Werber to share the top breeds that can get along with dogs as well as some tips for adding a cat to a multi-pet household.

Though these breeds generally tend to live well with other pets, how well a cat does with dogs can vary greatly depending on how well they're socialized and their previous experience with other animals. Even some breeds considered more aloof can be social, Werber said, so you'll want to consider every aspect of a potential pet's personality before making a commitment to one.

None of my dogs got that memo either. I often left the rotty, the lab/whippet/pitty mix, and the olde English bulldogge alone with the cats in the house, with nary a problem. The peke/pom/sheltie mix and the teacup chihuahua are still missing my last cat.

Generalized statements like the one earlier are more often wrong than right.

Hmmm, looks like I'm going to have to get Toby groomed. I've held off because he is so passive that I didn't want the groomer to scare/hurt him.

All I've ever done is had the vet's office what they call a "panty" shave for hygiene.

My wifes cat looks exactly like that. What type of cat is it?

Even the markings on the head look identical.
Weird cat, I can even walk him without a leash like a dog. Have done this several times for distances over a 1/4 with no problem.
Oh and my daughter almost went the jag way but did not have the law degree. She ended up bring the Weapons officer on a DDG. Before that she was on a DDG as electronic warfare officer... before that she was on one of those marine ships (with the LCAC's?).

Well, you have to be careful. One never knows for sure, but mostly if your dog seems stable there should not be any problem.

Even my German Shepherd never did anything bad to our cat behind closed doors, though they were not the best of friends. She did like to tease him periodically, which was hilarious, and he put up with her until pushed too far. But she never did anything bad to him.

OTOH, I heard a story of a GS who utterly massacred a family’s cat once he had matured, and the ensuing fight with the breeder over damages.

They are the ONE BREED that absolutely loves to be groomed because
they love the attention!!!! If Toby’s fur is really thick skip the bath at the groomer have them give him a lion cut, they leave the nice full maine,
full cuffs on their legs, a pom pom on the tail and shave the rest to the
skin!!! Picasso my boy LOVES his hair cuts he is SOOOOOOOOO much
more comfortable without all of that thick long fur!!!! I LOVE THEM TOO
he feels like a mink when petting him!!!!!

Funny & adorable!

My critter siblings have always figured out how to get along or tolerate each other, but nobody’s been much for interspecies snorgling - except for the kitten who insisted on cuddling in the hollow of my throat even as a full grown cat, LOL.

That’s really not very common at all. Animals raised together see each other as family and act accordingly.

Growing up we had a female husky mix and 2 cats at the center of our “cat herd” plus a cast of extras who came and went as they liked. The dog thought they were her puppies and tried to behave accordingly. The cats...well, some were more tolerant of a slobbery nape than others!

That’s really cool. Kitteh must have loved you a lot.

Our newest arrival, Shadow, likes to walk around on me when I go to bed. We found her in our yard six years ago, and she has done
that since then. Well, she walks on Bryan too. We have both gotten used to it over the years and fall asleep anyway. [smiles]

My vet’s assistants called it a potty trim. We bought a clipper and shaved the area ourselves. It paid for itself in the long run.
