HEBRON, Ill. (AP) - McHenry County officials say a northern Illinois man has died after falling off the back of a golf cart.
The McHenry County Sheriffs Office says 20-year-old Stephen Canfield of Harvard died in the early Sunday accident. Police say Canfield was riding on the back of a golf cart on a roadway in Hebron Township when he fell for unknown reasons. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Drunk more than likely. Who knows?
Who knew golf was such a dangerous game?
Yes, alcohol was involved.
Forgot to mention, I rolled the golfcart.
Familiar with the course but never feared playing it. Guess I’ll use the pull-cart if I do.
Was this guy kind of feeble or something? Must have hit his head, it’s the only way this makes any sense.
“early morning” accident means the wee, drunken hours after midnight.
Perhaps he died prior to falling off the cart. God knows. Yet I smell a lawsuit in the making.
And this poor guy falls out of a golf cart.
Apparently out on a street and no doubt the three were doing stupid things in the golf cart. Agree he either had a coronary or suffered a traumatic brain injury when his head hit the pavement. That's why I did all my stupid things in a golf cart on the turf.
Too bad it wasn’t zer0.
One can only hope.
I know too many people seriously injured on golf carts. Some with multiple surgeries as a result. Lived next to a neighbor that worked at a trauma hospital where many patients with missing arms and legs from golf carts. They are actually very dangerous. Alcohol or not.
He could have broken his neck when he hit the ground.
Yeah, I was stupid. And drunk. I could’ve been killed. As it was, I made it home with severe abrasions and contusions on one leg.
Dead drunk, apparently.
A young mother died here a few years ago falling from a golf cart. Nothing dangerous going on. She leaned wrong way and fell out. Hit her head when she didn’t put out her arms and instead held her chold close to protect him. Golf carts are moving vehicles
Nature’s way is often sad to witness.
A friend of a friend died exactly like this back in 2011. He was only in his early 30s and it was extremely shocking.
You just never know when your time on this Earth is up.
Heck at this point I’d take plugs or even x42...
They are not dangerous unless you are mis-using them. For their intended purpose(s) - including the way they are used in some residential communities to get around - they are very safe.
My brother rolled a golf cart. The spray of clubs through the air was quite lovely, viewed from sitting in the cart behind him.
I understand the view in the cart was not quite so lovely.
A beer a hole makes for interesting play by the time you get near the end. Yeah, we were young.
We once had to borrow the tractor to pull a cart out of the lake at the same course. Not exactly a country club, more of a country boy recreation place.
Sorry to hear that. Was there alcohol involved?
Harvard Ill. or Harvard U?
Tim Conway used to have a skit about this in the 70’s on the Carol Burnette Show. The cart would tip over on it’s side and lie there helpless, like a tipped turtle or an Angel fish
Yes, unfortunately. He was horsing around on the cart while driving between holes and it flipped over on him.
I fell out of a speeding go-kart in a parking lot once, I survived intact
Hebron, Ill. is near Harvard, Ill. Just fyi, although I’m guessing you were joking.
Sometimes all it takes is that one freek impact to bruise the cantaloupe in just the right way. I remember when I was 7 and stealing a ride on the back of bread truck the driver saw me and started spedding, I jumped off an my friend ran up laughing “two flips and a summersault”! I survived but would never do it again.
Makes sense, they would have just added weight and slowed you down.
In related news, President Barack Obama has filed for hazardous duty pay, retroactive to January 20, 2009 ....
It wasn’t the fall that killed him, it was the sudden stop.
Musta had a bad “driver”!
... well, the way they were headed, they were about 4 miles from Oak Grove Golf Course if they headed west from there on Rt. 173. If this was part of a planned circuit starting out going north then east, cutting south to the scene of the accident, it would have amounted to about 10 miles or more. Dunno. They got into it somehow.
He only had 2 beers before the accident.. and he is 6’3 and 250lbs.. he wasn’t drunk
They are very prone to tipping over. Hilly golf courses, sharp turns. Their intended purposes are for golf courses. When adult golfers are ending up missing limbs or killed, they are not safe. Add teenagers just getting around neighborhoods and goofing off and they are a hazard.
Don’t get me wrong, I like golf carts, but too many people think they are just a fun way to get around. Any fooling around and some plain stupidity has resulted in serious injury.
Walking is probably a healthier and safer way to get around the neighborhood.
Didn’t see that. Any info on what they were up to?
your response actually proves my point ...
