Panera Bread is going to start using kiosks to input customer orders. The fast-casual chain will start adding about eight kiosks per restaurant, writes Venessa Wong at Bloomberg Businessweek. Customers will also be able to order by phone.

As a result, there will be one to two fewer cashiers in restaurants.

Panera Bread CEO Ron Shaich said that the new system would help accuracy of orders. Customers would also be able to customize their food.

Shaich told Businessweek that it won't be cutting back on workers. The former cashiers will now carry food to customers' tables.

Guess that’s one way to do their pay what you can deal in some of their places...

The place is nothing but portion control. I feel every time I eat there I am getting nickle and dimed, now this.

My complaint against Panera was service was WAY too slow.
Hope its not too late.

It’s the wave of the future. Obama and his commie cabal can raise the minimum wage until all of the low-skill jobs will be done via technology.

Don’t know about WaWa, but Sheetz has taken it a step futher. You can place your order on-line, print out the barcode receipt, pay for it when you pick up the sandwich and it is waiting for you when you stop. Works great when I don’t have gas to pump, a bladder to empty or other things to do while waiting for them to complete my order.

CEO says this....
“The dirty little secret in the food industry is one in seven orders is wrong”

That’s funny...About a year ago Panera messed my order up twice before FINALLY getting it right.

I concur however, I must give them some props. Panera has a great donation program where they give away all the bread left at close of business each day. Our church gets huge bags full of wonderful bread from the Saturday batch. I have a savory variety of artisan breads to eat all week long, for zip! I keep in in the fridge and replace it each week with fresh loaves before it has a chance to get stale, ahhh! Thanks P!

Next time I visit Seattle to visit family, the $15/hr minimum wage will have been imposed. I expect to see a lot of these kiosks, in place of folks that made the old minimum wage.

I know a couple of Mickey D's drive-thrus that get 1 in 7 right.

My experience in the DC area with Panera is that the cashiers don't speak English very well. Using the kiosks will allow them to hire more non-English speakers to staff their restaurants at lower wages. No doubt there will also be personnel reductions.

Yep....

Fast Food places don't WANT to pay $15/hr for a button pusher. This is the first shot back at the "Living wage" idiots.

$15/hr sounds about right for a 1st level tech to keep kiosks maintained at a handful of stores.

I don’t know if the portions are getting smaller or not because I only ate there a couple of times.

But I can tell you if the Kiosks work out replacing cashiers the first time the minimum wage goes up there will be layoffs.

Yes, they probably will cut back on workers, but they won’t announce it.

Well, think about it this way -— there will be MORE business for MAKERS of the Kiosks (mechanics, engineers, programmers, etc. ).

...there will be layoffs.

Isn't that what I said? And what do the size of portions have to so in response to my comments?

Eggs-Zactly.

I’d rather use a kiosk than deal with some pimple-face kid making $15.00 an hour.

Shaich told Businessweek that it won't be cutting back on workers. The former cashiers will now carry food to customers' tables until Panera is satisfied with the implementation of the kiosks and the media buzz dies down. Then staffs at each location will lose a couple of employees.
