After the big names are off the board in the NFL Draft, the biggest question may not be when Michael Sam will be picked, it may be whether Michael Sam will be picked at all. Despite being named the Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC, Samĺs underwhelming physical measurables and his lack of a defined role in defenses could prevent him from being the first openly gay player selected in the draft.

You mean they expect him to play football?

Isn't being gay enough for them?

Homophobes!

Maybe he’ll got down in history as the “first openly gay player” to not be selected in the draft. That’s “historical” too, isn’t it? LOL!

I think the NFL should offer the lgbt crowd some protest seating for the draft, should the inevitable occur. I suggest directly next to the NY Jets fans.

Lawsuit, lawsuit! I can’t believe these scouts would say such things, much less think them. Time to put the fascist hammer down on these...these pigs!

Sell the team, sell their homes, cars, and everything but their clothes. Ban them from the NFL altogether - no tickets, no tailgating, not even a hot dog.

Nothing less than poverty for these homophobes!

If he doesn’t get picked by the later rounds, San Francisco will HAVE to pick him, otherwise the locals will make the Redskin controversy look tame, by comparison.

As far as linebackers go, he will not get drafted, but will get signed as an undrafted free agent.

Maybe we don’t want to say out loud, or too loud, but....

could it be that this guy is a marginal NFL player? And, in such case, no team will want to deal with the media circus that would surround him as the first openly homosexual player???

I think somebody would put up with the circus if he could make a major contribution. But if he’s one of these guys whose talents put him “on the bubble”, I can imagine many teams passing on him.

Then again, in today’s politically correct world, would such passing him up be considered homophobic???? Will the whole NFL find itself facing a backlash if no team takes him???

As I said at the time he went public, Sam is a fourth round draft pick — at best. If he were a serious draft pick he would not have followed his agent's PR ploy and and have make a big splash attempting to leverage his practice of homosexuality. It was pretty clear at the time that his NFL talent was limited and that's why he went all public. My guess is that you'll never hear much of the guy in context of the NFL again.

If Mr. Sam isn't drafted the gaystapo will scream homophobia and the networks will offer him a job. He is too important for the gay lobby to let go. They will find a way to put him in front of television cameras every Sunday afternoon. I don't really need another excuse to stop watching the NFL.

Only a team that's hard-up will draft him.

He'll bring a truckload of troubles and problems with him wherever he goes. He'll always be the center of both good and bad attention....and he'll also be in the in the center of the limelight in whichever club he goes to work for.

Few teammates want that. No owner, coach or front office wants that. Probably not even a cheerleader wants that.

Only the depraved media wants that. It really turns them on.

Poor dear. However, Sam, himself alone, troubled trouble when trouble wasn't troubling him.

Tough rocks.

6’2” 262 LB’s running a 4.91 - Yeah he’s a tweener. Not big enough to play DE in a 4-3 and not fast enough to play OLB in a 3-4.

Nobody wants to draft him, knowing that if they cut him, they’ll be accused of homophobia.

And if he's ever injured, the other player will be accused of "going after" him on purpose -- unnecessary roughness of the poor little gay guy! Good grief! I'm not even much a football fan, but this woman is sick to death of seeing the NFL turned into a platform for breast cancer and perverts.

NFL Team Official: Michael Sam Is ‘Not A Really Good Athlete’

May 9, 2014 11:36 AM

ST. LOUIS (CBS St. Louis) — It could be a very long weekend for Michael Sam.

The openly gay football player from the of Missouri is hoping an NFL team takes a chance and makes history by drafting him, but some experts believe he might end up being an undrafted free agent.

Scouts told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that they don’t see Sam’s transitioning to the NFL.

“Most of his production was hustle stuff,” an NFC personnel official told the Journal Sentinel. “There’s production, but he’s short, he’s not a really good athlete and he doesn’t play good against the run.”

He continued: “He’s kind of a one-task pass rusher. Just run up the field. And they swallow him up and kind of push him around.”

One NFC personnel director stated that Sam doesn’t have a position in the league.

“He’s not a linebacker, and he’s really not a defensive end,” the personnel director told the Journal Sentinel. “I’d certainly take him to camp. You’ve got to admire how hard he plays.”

An AFC executive said Sam was “short and slow.” Sam stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs 262 pounds.

Despite the potential setbacks, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is hoping to see Sam in the league.

“I want to see Michael Sam get an opportunity to play in the NFL,” Goodell told ESPN Thursday before the first round of the NFL Draft. “We like to say the NFL is the ultimate meritocracy. If you can play football, they want to see you play. The teams want you. The fans want you. And that’s ultimately what it’s all about.”

Goodell continued: “I have great respect for Michael, his courage, his decision to become public, and I’m optimistic that he’s going to get that opportunity, and hopefully he can play at this level.”

Sam, who was the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year, will be the first openly active gay player in the league.
