Why Asian Americans Excel At Academics
Business Insider ^ | 05/06/2014 | TOM JACOBS, PACIFIC STANDARD

Posted on 05/06/2014 9:33:01 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Why do Asian Americans, as a group, tend to excel at academics? Newly published research arrives at a simple answer: They work harder than their non-Asian peers.

The study also attempts to answer the less-simple question of why these kids tend to put more effort into their studies, and comes up with two likely answers: The culturally based belief that effort leads to achievement, and the fact that recent immigrants are highly motivated to succeed.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sociologists Amy Hsin of Queens College and Yu Xie of the University of Michigan analyze data from two nationally representative studies: The Kindergarten Cohort of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, which tracks children who entered kindergarten in 1998; and the Educational Longitudinal Study, which looked at the habits and achievements of high school students who were sophomores in 2004.

The first group of kids was tracked through eighth grade; their scores were based on their teachers’ assessment of their proficiency in reading, math, and general knowledge, as well as their “attentiveness, task persistence, and eagerness to learn.”

The high school students’ scores were based on their grade point averages and performance on standardized tests. In addition, their teachers reported their level of attentiveness in class, and noted whether they felt “the student works hard for his/her grades.”

The researchers report that the achievement gap between Asian American and white American kids starts off as small to non-existent, but gradually grows, peaking in 10th grade. This suggests the difference reflects “academic effort rather than differences in cognitive ability,” they write.

The answer I’ve received from several Asian-Americans who I’ve asked about this is that their parents would beat them if they didn’t excel.

The culturally based belief that effort leads to achievement, and the fact that recent immigrants are highly motivated to succeed.

In other words, racism. (/sarc)

I work at a university.

I never see the Asian kids goofing off... NEVER!

They are not in any squishy courses, either... they are in the most challenging and rigorous disciplines... and they work their a*#es off.

They are from a culture (like our parents and grandparents) where calling a person a student or saying that a person is educated, is the highest compliment you can pay him/her.

There's a stigma to being uneducated and absolutely nothing trumps academic achievement.

Asian families value education and instill that value in their kids. Contrast that to the African American community where education is often deemed as “acting white”, honor students are bullied and the pervasive “gangsta rap”/ebonics culture assures failure.

i did a wedding video a couple years back for a Vietnamese couple, he was a big wig at the Toyota plant and she just got her doctorate on pharmacy. during the ceremony they lauded the bride saying, nine years ago you got off the boat and couldnt speak a lick of english and here you are today with your doctorate. wonderful, respectful couple that appreciated my work, paid me in full without asking for discounts and said thank you profusely. i compare them to the few African American gigs i shot where the couple and guests were rude, disrespectful and ordered me around like their slave.

And lest anyone think that innate racial abilities are a factor here, notice that immigrant black families from Africa do extremely well. We have several in our community. It’s expected that the kids WILL get a PhD. Like Asians, Africans are not afraid to beat their kids. And they do. And it works.

Japan, South Korea and every Chinese country/community outside of Mainland China are not communists and have as good or better living standards than Western countries.

The fact that Mainland China and North Korea are poverty stricken hellholes in comparison only highlights just how badly communism wrecked their societies.

The lady who cuts my hair is Chinese, laughed when I showed her your comment and simply responded, “Beating not necessary because they grew up know what was expected of them. Not doing well is not an option.” Her two children are in junior high and the parents always find someplace in the summer for them to attend that has a structured educational program. If the children have no homework during the school week, their father assigns them an education project to work on and they must present a written and verbal report to both their parents.

TV is not on in their house during the week, only rarely during the weekend, there are no video games and at Christmas there is only one small gift under their tree. Instead their family has their large “gift exchange” with the children after they receive their final grade card for the year and then it’s only one “larger” gift.

Just an entirely different attitude than most American families toward education and the father is a large part of the educational process.

Will whites be offended by this? Probably not. There’s a lot of truth to it.

Now, substitute “asians” in this article with “whites” and substitute “whites” in this article with “blacks”.

Would blacks be offended? Count on it.

Same as Jews: because they mostly live in major metropolitan areas. The need for invasive big government increases with population density.

Any teacher could have told them this. The Chinese students study, many American students never even read their textbooks. Too busy playing games and partying and taking drugs and boozing. Cultural differences, to be sure, @cultural differences” is a very nice tactful way of putting it.

Well you say that as if the usual suspects won’t point that out. I have nothing but admiration for cultures that excel and thrive in an academic environment—and I loathe the cultures that don’t.

What does that make me?

Simple...the importance of education is drilled into them every minute of every day.Same with Jews.A friend of mine is a graduate of Radcliffe and has a good friend, and fellow classmate, who's in Harvard's admissions office. This friend tells her that if it wasn't for Harvard’s affirmative action policies every enrollee in the entire university would be Jewish or Asian.

My kids, several of whom attended UC schools that are well-populated by Asians, report that a significant number of them do not do so well in college. They are the kids who had no life, who did nothing but study in high school. They get to college, have a little more control over their time and their interests, and they are now competing against a smarter pool of kids. Now, it is not so easy to excel by simply working hard, and a lot of them choose not to work as hard as they used to.

I'm not sure how true this is. I know there are still a lot of very smart Asians graduating from college. But it is believed to be true by a lot of kids who go to college with Asians. They believe they are not doing as well in college as in high school overall.

A scientist was interested in studying how far bullfrogs can jump. He brought a bullfrog into his laboratory, set it down, and commanded, ‘Jump, frog, jump!’
The frog jumped.

The scientist measured the distance, then noted in his journal, ‘Frog with four legs jumped siz feet.’

Then he cut the frog’s front legs off and ordered, ‘Jump, frog, jump!’
The frog struggled and jumped.

The scientist noted in his journal, ‘Frog with two legs jumped two feet.’

Next, the scientist cut off the frog’s back legs. Once more, he shouted, ‘Jump, frog, jump!’
The frog just lay there.

‘Jump, frog, jump!’ the scientist repeated.
Nothing.

The scientist noted in his journal, ‘Frog with no legs is deaf.’

Friend of mine knew the dead at one of the best universities in California. The university is best known for its science curriculum.

The dean told my friend that they do use affirmative action - for white students. They’ve a lot of legacies who’s kids or grandkids apply and its in their best interest to let these kids in.

Otherwise, according to the dean, every single kid in the school would be of Asian descent and that includes India.

The only Asian countries I’m aware of which still claim to be Communist are China, Vietnam and the Norks.

China is still ruled by an organization calling itself the Communist Party, and uses some Communist rhetoric. But any country with several private property billionaires and a great many private property millionaires cannot be called Communist in any real sense with a straight face.

Vietnam is pretty much following China down this road.

The Norks have a hereditary God-King, who rules with a system elevating the military far above civilians in importance. What is Communist about that, except the language?

- and so Harvard should be all Asian or Jewish. Take the very best students you can get. Lowering standards based on what a student body looks like is crazy.

Want to see a liberals head explode - ask them if they would be willing to give up their child’s well earned placement at a university in the name of ‘ diversity ‘.

Ask them in the name of ‘ fairness ‘ if its okay for their child to attend Skunksville University rather than Harvard because a lesser qualified student took their place.

Ditto for blacks from the West Indies. In NYC, for example, they are only about 10% of the total black population, but they comprise the majority of professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.) in Harlem.

Also, a friend from Miami once told me whites would fear for their safety if they spent time in Liberty City. But in Little Haiti? No problem.

I agree fully with your general point that basically speaking, China is no longer communist except in name. So I don't mean to quibble. But it's not just several billionaires in China, to wit:

According to an article I saw the other day, China now has several hundred billionaires -- already something like 1/5th of the world total, with the number likely to continue rising.

Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that.

China has millennia of history of government officials getting involved in truly astonishing corruption, as in entire armies, 100,000 men or more, dying of starvation because somebody embezzled the money that was supposed to pay for their food.

Since the Party seems to have gotten rid of its equivalent of the Emperor, who would occasionally prune back the most spectacular exampled of corruption, there does not now seem to be any check at all on Party members’ stealing.

Historically, the Mandate of Heaven deserts a dynasty (or a Party) when it gets to this point.
