•Marcos Ambrose Allows Fans to Pay Fine Forward: Marcos Ambrose and his #9 Richard Petty Motorsports team are on a mission from now to the Sprint Showdown to make the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. If Ambrose does make it to All-Star night, he will pay forward the $25,000 fine he received after the event at Richmond International Raceway to Victory Junction. Ambrose and the team have committed to pay the fine forward from potential All-Star Race winnings and donate it to the camp founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son, Adam. Victory Junction enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, at no cost to children or their families.
Ambrose first entertained the idea after so many of his fans here in the United States and his native Australia wanted to aid monetarily with his fine. The 2013 All-Star has now found a unique way for fans to not only support him, but to help children experience life-changing moments at Victory Junction and assist the camp helped built by his boss, “The King” Richard Petty.
“I had a tremendous outpouring of support after Richmond from so many fans,” said Ambrose. “But, that situation was between myself and another driver. I had to pay the consequences from that and my fans had nothing to do with what happened. But, they have been so supportive of me in NASCAR, that maybe there was something we could do so they could make a difference. If they want to support me, they can vote for me and we’ll take the total of the fine and pay it forward to Victory Junction. I’ve been to Victory Junction a few times. It’s a place like no other and really can take your breath away when you see the kids having so much fun. I’m a father and this is a place that really hits home. So, this is an opportunity to take an unfortunate situation and we can all come together to make a difference. The fans can just vote for me for the All-Star race and I’ll try to race in. We’ll do this together and hopefully do something special.” Ambrose will have three opportunities to be eligible for the Sprint All-Star Race. He can win this weekend at Kansas Speedway, finish first or second in the Sprint Showdown before the Sprint All-Star Race and finally fans can vote him in. Fans have three different methods to vote for Ambrose leading into the All-Star Race, including using the NASCAR Mobile application on their mobile device. Votes from a mobile handset count double. Fans can also go online to NASCAR.com/SprintFanVote and also visit the Sprint Experience at the track and vote. Voting will end on May 16.(RPM)(5-6-2014)

Would be fun to go. Used to live on a farm about 60 years ago which was part of the land on which the track was built. Drove by there about 5 years ago. Hardly recognized the area.

Kahne and Truex Jr. qualifying times disallowed UPDATE:

after qualifying for the Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR announced that the times for #5-Kasey Kahne and #78-Martin Truex Jr. had been disallowed. Kahne’s car did not meet the minimum weight requirement and Truex Jr’s car did not meet minimum height requirement that is used for restrictor-plate tracks. Kahne will start 41st and Truex Jr will start 42nd. #5 crew chief Kenny Francis and Truex Jr. offered these quotes about the situation:

Kenny Francis, Crew chief of the #5 Farmer Insurance / Thankamillionteachers.com Chevy on the #5 teams time getting disallowed: “Basically we had a malfunction with a ballast container. The cap that holds the ballast in came out. It could be mechanical or human error we are not really sure what happened. At the end of the day 25 pounds of ballast came out and we were 25 pounds light at the scales. The time was disallowed and we will have to start at the back.”

Martin Truex Jr., #78 Furniture Row Chevy - time was disallowed after failing post qualifying inspection: “After positing the fastest practice speed yesterday, today’s result and infraction were disappointing to say the least. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we have a fast car for tomorrow’s race, and as we have said many times, qualifying really doesn’t mean that much here.”(Team Chevy)(5-4-2014)

UPDATE: Kenny Francis, the crew chief for the #5 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been penalized for rules violations committed during qualifying May 3 at Talladega Superspeedway. The infraction is a P3 level penalty and violates Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4.3(A)1-c (unapproved added weight and/or weight affixed improperly) of the 2014 rule book. As a result, Francis has been fined $25,000. The infraction was discovered in post-qualifying inspection.(NASCAR)(5-6-2014)

wow, how neat is that? There won’t be anything built where I grew up; it will always be rural ranch land.

on the other hand, where I lived in ABQ is quite different now - i look at satellite images from time to time. Houses were built in the empty lot across from the house, a business was put in in the field behind the house, and they paved the street!

Saw Bobby Allison Race there back in the early 80’s in the Miller High Life Car. Oddly enough I move to NC and find out that He lives right around the corner and shops at the same grocery store We do. Ain’t life strange? Spent several Seasons helping Crew an SCCA Formula Ford there also.

Texas World Speedway to be replaced by houses:

The College Station City (Texas) Council unanimously gave conditional consent to create a new municipal utility district that will replace the Texas World Speedway just outside of College Station. The plan will now go to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for its approval, during which time a series of agreements will come before city council to ready services and sync up the development plans with the city’s building standards. The developer is asking for the city to provide water and sewer services to the community. The concept plan for the development will span about 550 acres in College Station’s extra-territorial jurisdiction, and add about 1,400 single-family homes, 27 acres of commercial development, 14 acres for a future College Station school district school and 73 acres of detention and greenways. The Brazos County Appraisal District values that land at $5.4 million, but the projected build out value is $514 million. Three of the public speakers spoke on behalf of the racing community that would miss the track. Mayor Pro Tem Karl Mooney said the speedway just hasn’t been able to keep up with the times.(The Eagle)(4-2-2014)
